Choosing Drives In System Image

I'd like to know if there is anyway to force how windows 7 chooses the drives that are used to create a system image.  For some reason my D: drive is now being selected and there is no OS installed on this drive, just some user folders along with a lot of data.  Yet for some reason the system image utility wants to include this entire drive in the backup. How can I prevent this drive from being selected, the option is greyed out when running the backup utility.

Win7 System Image - All Logical Drives Are Selected
I have run into a glitch (or maybe a feature) in Win7 (Ultimate 64 bit RTM):- there are several logical drives (win7 system partition, page file partition, data archive partition, XP partition, etc.) on a PC- when I try to create a system image all these drives (except page file drive) are selected and I canot deselect them (check box is checked and greyed out).

All guides I found so far tell that I should be able to select which drives to backup, but it's not what I see. What is the solution? Is it driven by some drive-specific settings? Or is it a glitch?

Win 7 Installation To System With 5 Logical Or System Hard Drives Drives.
I am planning to upgrade my XP Professional system via a clean install of Windows 7 Professional 64bit.  The hard drive sub-system consists of a 12 drive RAID array that presents 5 68GB logical hard drives to the operating system.  Each of these drives are currnetly partitioned into single FAT32 partitions (C: through G:).I understand that the C: drive will have to be converted to NTFS but as I understand the installation process the data on that drive will have to be saved to an external drive and then restored.

I would prefer to stick with FAT32 and retain the ability to dual boot to MS-DOS - but I can live with it.  Drives D: through G: are another matter. The drives are used mainly for data but there are some programs that I have installed in "E:Program Files" over the years to keep the C:  drive from running out of space.

I realize that all programs will have to be re-installed loosing that option is not that big a deal. The question boils down to: Do drives D: through G: have to be converted to NTFS or will Windows 7 live with the existing FA32 setup?   Also, I saw some chatter suggesting that it might be possile to install Windows 7 on a FAT32 partition-- if that is the case this whole question becomes moot.

WAIK: Error When Selecting Image In System Image Manager
I'm using the RC of the Windows Automated Installation Toolkit for Windows 7.I'm following the instructions to build an answer file for an unattended installtion. These are the instructions:
On your technician computer, insert the Windows 7 product DVD.

Navigate to the Sources directory on your DVD-ROM drive and copy the Install.wim file from the Windows product DVD to a location on the computer.

To open Windows SIM, click Start, click All Programs, click Microsoft Windows AIK, and then click Windows System Image Manager.

On the Windows SIM File menu, click Select Windows Image.

In the Select a Windows Image dialog box, navigate to the location where you saved Install.wim in Step 1, and then click Open. You will be prompted to select an image. Choose the Windows image that you want to install, and then click OK.You will be prompted to create a catalog file. Click Yes to generate the file.

When I do this, WSIM starts to process the image. The status label reads "Mounting image" and then later "Serializing" and then "Unmounting image".After that it stops with an error:windows SIM was unable to generate a catalogDetails:

What Is A System Image ?
I'm confused by the backup options.  With Vista, I could backup my entire C: drive, which included the system by doing a "Complete PC Backup."  With 7, I can make a "System Image" and/or backup the C: drive.  I chose both, and I ended up with 2 vhd files, one that appears to be a complete copy of C:, and the other is labeled "System Reserved", is only 40 gb, and when mounted contains no files.  Is the "System Reserved" vhd the "System Image", what is it good for, and doesn't a complete backup of C: make it unecessary?

System Image Backup
I recently purchased a new computer (Dell XPS8000 running Windows 7).  I backed up my files and created a systems image onto an external 1tb hard drive.  When I review "System Space" on the Backup and Restore Window, the systems image has consumed 103gb of the hard drive.  Realizing that much depends on the systems loaded on the PC, is that a reasonable amount of space, or is it excessive?

My program files on the PC are 2.86gb, the Microsoft file is 15.75gb, and I have 77gb of images stored on the desktop.  The total amount of memory on the PC shows 800gb of 916gb available (total memory if 1tb).

Backup Of System Image
I perform an incremental back-up every day using the built-in backup program.

How often would you do a whole system image? I was thinking of only doing that every few months or less. Each image would be 80GB.

Restoring System Image To A Different Harddrive
I backed up my windows system disk using the build in "create system image". Now my system harddrive is failing so I need to restore my backup to a different harddrive, I figured something this basic would be handled easily by the Windows 7 system restore, but I guess I was wrong, it refuses to restore the image to any other harddrive except the failing one. Is it really true that the image can only be restored to a hdd that is exactly the same size as the original was or the same hdd?

Is there anyway to skip the disk check? Just for record my new harddrive is twice the size of the original and the backup image is only 10GB so it cannot be because of lack of space. What's the point of making a system image if you can't even use it when your harddrive fails? Are there any other tools that can be used to restore the image created by Windows 7?

Create A System Image Tutorials
Windows 7 comes with an option of creating a system image or hard disk image.

You can take snapshot of your Windows partition which will contain Windows and all the programs along with settings and files. This is a similar functionality that is provided in the by software tools like Acronis True Image to backup your computer and restore it when something goes wrong.

The advantage of using this tool is that you don’t have to reinstall Windows 7 if it becomes unbootable and irreparable; you just have to restore the image that you have taken which will overwrite the current unbootable volume and restore the files, programs and all settings as it was present when the system image was taken.

Error Creating System Image
I did a clean install of windows 7 professional on a 500 gig drive.  Machine is an older Dell XPS wiht 2 gig RAM.  I ran all the windows 7 updates.  Before adding any additional software, I tried to do a backup.  When I back-up files, it works.  If I try to create a system image, I get an error message.I reported this to Microsoft technical support.  No exaggeration... I have had 6 different people try to fix this problem over the past 7 days.

In total, they have had control of my computer for over 8 hours. The last word from Microsoft technical support is that this appears to be a bug in windows 7.  Any ideas on how to fix this?  I would prefer to stay with the windows 7 backup feature.  This was one of the attractions to me for moving up to 7.

The error message is:"A shadow copy could not be created. Please check "VSS" and "SPP" application event logs for more information. The specified object was not found. Error code: 0x81000019I have tried to backup for an external 1.5T seagate extreme drive as well as a 1T internal seagate drive.

System Image Backups Disappear
In building my Windows 7 RC sytem, including installing my applications, I make a fair amount of use of the system image backup to an external drive. Things worked fine with backups 1-9, including several restores therefrom. But backup 10 caused backups 1-9 to disappear from SPPMetadataCache even though there was a great deal of disk space available. An attempted (and aborted) restore showed that only #10 was presented as a possible restore point. Anyone have a similar experience?

How To Delete System Image Backup ?
In preparation for installing Win7 RC, I'm trying to free up disk space on a external USB drive to do a backup using Windows Easy Transfer.  I've gone into the "Manage Windows Backup disk space" dialog, and I've deleted all of the "Data file backups" and the "System image".  However, the dialog still reports that a system image is still using up 32GB.  I've only used this external drive on this one PC, and I can't figure out how to delete this 32GB system image.

This external drive is not bootable, I don't need the backups on this drive, and I can't find out where the system image is stored on this drive. Can anyone tell me how to get rid of this hidden system image backup?  I need the space. (and, yes, windirstat does report that there is 32.8GB in "unknown".)

Questions About Using System Image In Backup
I have a couple of questions relating to the system recovery of a Windows 7 machine. First I should say I have experiance of using ASR backup on XP and 2003 machines but have had very little to do with Vista and 2008 machines so I suspect things have changed somewhat now I have got to Windows 7.
Firstly could someone confirm that the ASR backup method has now totally gone from Windows 7? And presumably the nearest thing to this is the creating a system image in backup?

Anyway I have had a go with the system image method today and have one question. My original intention was to send the image to DVD(s). I was warned that I would need around 13GB to store the image and inserted my first DVD into the burner. Anyway the image was getting sent to the DVD and I presumed I would be prompted to insert a second, third DVD etc. However I got the message "The media in the drive has too little space". Should I ge this message, surely I should get prompted to insert the next blank DVD?

Create System Image After Each Backup
When I use Win 7 backup, it gives me the option each time I create a backup to create a system image. I created a system image on a CD a couple of days ago. Why does it ask me if I want to create another each time I do the backup? Is it talking about creating one on my hard drive, not a CD?

If it's just my hard drive then perhaps I should create one each time, but creating one on a CD is onerous. Plus, if this is the case, (that it wants me to create a CD) I don't know how that's to be done if the backup is on a schedule in the middle of the night.

Iso Backup SYSTEM IMAGE
Did a fresh install of Windows 7 64-bit and all my apps, deleted Windows.old, defrag'ed and activated. Then created a SYSTEM IMAGE using Win 7 BACKUP and RESTORE, so far so good.

Win 7 and my apps take up 43.9 GB on the hard drive but the SYSTEM IMAGE it created on my external drive is only 23.7 GB. Tried it on my laptop with similar results ISO was about half the HDD. Does that sound right? Just seems the ISO should have matched the HDD GB-wise unless it compresses or something.

Backup / System Image Problem
I'm trying to make a system image and configure backups but I'm unable to select the internal drive that has the space I need.

I have a 1Tb drive portioned into C: [Windows 7] and D: [Data]

and a 750Gb drive [H:] that used to have XP on it that I want to put my backups on.

I used to dual boot XP and Windows 7.

Computer Management > Disk Management shows

C: Healthy (Boot, Page File, Active, Crash Dumo, Primary Partition)

D: Healthy (Primary Partition)

H: Healthy (System, Active, Primary Partition)

System Imaging/Backup help says you can't backup to the system (startup) drive (not sure why?)

Is there any way to change which drive is designated as the system drive?

I've removed the dual boot and used bcdedit on C: to only reference itself

What's else do I need to do to make C: the system drive?

System Image Backup Missing
I have run the "create system image" successfully until today. I have an external HD for that image file. It appears to run, goes through the steps and says it has created the image. But when I go to the external HD and click on the Image file that was created there is nothing there. It shows 0. What could I have done to do this. I even looked for that image file on my C: drive, just in case, but it is not there either.

Restore From System Image Failed
Actually, it said that was successful and Windows did boot, but beyond that it was pretty useless. This is on Windows 7 Ultimate x64 RTM. I've done a restore before on the same system and it worked without incident and also on Server 2008. This time, after the restore completed and Windows booted most programs would not start (the usual message was that "the program is not compatible with this version of Windows", although Outlook complained about a missing entry point in Kernel32) and a chkdsk showed a large number of disk errors.

I tried the restore from another copy of the same image that I had copied to another drive and also from an earlier time (from the same image), all with the same results. I've given up and started to reinstall, but it's pretty discouraging to have a backup that you can't rely on.

A few questions:

1) Is there any way to verify that a system image is good?
2) Are there any known issues that could cause this problem?
3) Is there any way to create multiple independent system images? I suspect that if you always update the image in the same location, then once it goes bad, it's permanently bad.

If it matters, my hardware is Core i7 950, 6GB RAM, Corsair P128 SSD system disk, 2x Velociraptor 150 RAID 0 data disk. The image was stored on the RAID array and I also copy it to a WD eSATA drive.

Create System Image Problem/errors ?
anybody else having this issue with the upgrade of Windows 7 HP on a HP machine as a matter of fact as well with there upgrade version.

It's like what i am trying to do is this.

New with True Image - Couple basic kinda questions ??? | Forums

That is my post an explain pretty much what i am trying to do (even though that one focus's on that certain program for questions there but)

mainly trying to do a system restore image disc. That way every time i want to or have to reformat i do not have to go through the whole damn going back to Vista then the whole upgrade process again.

Anyways so speaking with HP of course we know there is no way to do this or for me even to get a HD with factory Windows 7 installed on it WITH a Windows 7 recovery partition factory done. So this is really the only way to do it. Where it would kinda actually be like a Windows 7 recovery partition.

OK with that being said. Speaking with HP came up the idea and notice the new features and system in the backup and recover section where you can create a repair disc or create a system image.

Well they said to create a repair disc and i could use it to go back to a so called day one install or fresh install/upgrade of Windows 7.

OK we know this is not true as it is only a repair disc only so.. This is where it gets back to "is these screwed up and not working for you guy's either" as the title say's.

The one link inside the backup section that says "create system image" is not working. It kinda stops and freezes up half way through on same spot every time. When it gets to disc#3. It tells to take out and insert another disc label it blah blah blah.. but at that point will not even open the disc tray. Gotta cancel it out and then restart (even to open the tray and get the disc out). More less to even try and finish the process. Which i tried it 3 times and same thing every time.

Using dvd-rw's as well. My systems fine and plenty bad azz so i know that's not it either or that that is what is making it freeze up. Soo.. anybody else try this yet and having the same problem with that feature?
