Cannot Customize Notification Area

Mar 25, 2010

My notification area always displays all icons and notifications, but when I want to customize those systray icons, for some reason I can no longer use "Restore default icon behaviors" or make any other customations. In window "Select which icons and notifications appear on the taskbar" all the options beneath "Behaviors" are inaccessable (showing 'Only show notifications' in a greyed out fashion). Also, when trying to click on any icon beneath "Icons" nothing happens.

At the bottom the selection option "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" is greyed out and its checkbox unmarked.

When I click on "Turn system icons on or off" I get the correct window ("Turn system icons on or off"), and "Behaviors" are accessable. However, when clicking "Restore default icon behaviors" nothing happens. Clicking on "Customize notification icons" brings me back to the "Select which icons..." window with those non working options.

I have tried Brink's tutorial "How to Hide or Show System Icons and Notifications in Windows 7", but no matter which of the included .reg files I merge, nothing changes and "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar" stays greyed out with its checkbox unmarked.

Otherwhise, my system (Windows 7 64-bit Ultimate) runs great, I just cannot make some systray customations that I would now like to.

Customize The Notification Area In Windows 7

Dec 1, 2008

We continue our series about the taskbar with a tutorial about the notification area. Although the notification area is present in the Windows graphical user interface since Windows 95, never before had it been so easy to customize as it is in Windows 7. This article shows you several tricks about configuring it and transforming it into something more appropriate to your needs. I will show: how to locate the notification area, control the display behavior of notification icons, turn on or off system icons, restore the default behavior of the notification area, set the notification icons to be always displayed, and change the position of individual notification icons.

Clean Up Notification Area?

May 3, 2010

I have some programs that have I have uninstalled but when I click on customize notification area, they are still in that list. How can I clear the list of old programs?

The notification area also does NOT show my bluetooth icon which I set to "show icon and notifications"It was there before but no longer there. I've tried restarting my computer but it doesn't fix the problem.

Ok I was able to clean up the notification area but it still does NOT show my bluetooth icon while I have a bluetooth dongle inserted in the USB.Whenever I set it to show icon and notification, it tells me that "This notification icon is not currently active. It will be shown the next time it becomes active." But it always showed the icon in the past even when i wasnt using it.I noticed that every time I set it to show icon and notifications, it keeps resetting back to only show notifications when i go back to the customization windows

VBscript To Add Program To Notification Area?

May 10, 2011

I'm creating an image which must build in an unattended fashion. The client (the end user of the resulting image) wants to have the icon for one of the included programs included in the notification area. While this CAN be done manually, because of the required build process, I do not have the option of manually adding the program to the notification area; I will need to automate this via a script or other method.I've found VB scripts for adding ("pinning") programs to the Start Menu and Taskbar, but not for the Notification Area.DIT: To clarify further, I want to change the Behavior for this program from "Only show notifications" to "Show icon and notifications", but do so from a command line or script.

Notification Area Need To Remove Many Apps

Apr 29, 2012

In my notification area (by the time) I have three objects: Sound controls, internet, and Action Center. By clicking on the arrow next to it you see a tray of many other things that I like to keep out of sight. However, often one of these items (For example, Dropbox) will randomly hop out of the tray and into the list with the other three objects and will be in clear sight. It is not just Dropbox that does it (although that seems to be the usual perp), so I don't believe it has something to do with Dropbox connecting all the time or being "active". Is there any solution to this problem? I have tried going into the properties of the notification area ("Customize...") and turning the icons off, but to no avail.

The Notification Area (System Tray)

Apr 1, 2010

In this tutorial, we'll take a look at the much improved Notification Area (or System Tray as it is commonly referred to). The Notification Area has become increasingly cluttered on many systems as more and more programs place their notification icons at the bottom of the screen. Windows 7 streamlines the Notification Area and significantly reduces clutter, as you'll see in this video.

Remove Avgtray.exe.old From The Hidden Notification Area?

Jun 9, 2012

I recently installed the AVG summer 2012 update & it has left "avgtray.exe.old" in the hidden notification area. This shows when I select "customize"I would like to remove this as it is causing the AVG Icon (avgtray.exe) not to show, when I click on the "show hidden Icons" up arrow and I'm concerned that AVG may not be working properly.avgtray.exe is showing in processes in the task manager & I think it's running properly. It's updates & scans etc.I've uninstalled & re-installed AVG numerous times at the advice of the AVG forum, who have now advised me to contact microsoft.I've also run regedit, deleted Icon streams & past Icon stream and then stopped & restarted explorer.exe. All without success.I'm not sure how to contact microsoft & I keep finding a microsoft technical website, but they want to charge me before I post a question.I've recently checked & other people have also reported this problem on the avg forum.

Task Manager Not Shown In Notification Area?

Jul 5, 2012

Have a question that relates to the taskmanager not showing up in my notification area/system tray. When in use, it should show up in the notification area/system tray, yes? I have notifications set to show all.The way I have it set up is there is a shortcut of taskman in my startup folder. The properties of the shortcut are to start it minimized. This way when the PC starts, the taskmanager is not seen/opened. The options in the taskmanager itself are to hide when minimized, minimize on use.So the way it used to work was when the PC was started or rebooted, I'd have taskmanager running in the system tray. But for whatever reason it no longer does this. I've checked the shortcut settings of taskman in startup and everything looks ok. If I opened taskmananger and then minimized it, it would normally retreat back to the system tray. This no longer happens either, it just disappears.

The only changes made to how the PC starts up is, I have it auto-login into a password protected account and then the account enters the locked state before anything can be done. This way the PC is still protected, but I'm no longer waiting for things to load after entering my PW the old way. With it setup this way as soon as I enter my password from the Locked screen, everything has loaded and its ready to go much faster than not having it auto login/lock.I have not tried to boot/startup the old way, but I wouldn't want to keep it that way even if thats whats keeping taskmanager from starting up in the system tray. Because the problem still exists that when taskman is manually opened with hide when minimized and minimize on use, it just disappears and doesn't show up in the notification area/system tray.

Notification Area Settings Not Staying After Reboot?

Jan 26, 2012

I have 2 issues with the notification area and trying to get settings to stay after restarting the computer. My office is deploying its first year of Windows 7 Pro systems and we make an excessive use of the Group Policy feature "Run only allowed Windows Applications." My first issue with the notification area comes to quick access to the management utility. If I click the arrow to view all of the hidden icons and click the Customize option, I get the message that the "Administrator has prohibited the use..." of that feature. I can go to the control panel and access the notification area through there though. I have also elevated my user rights to administrative for unrestricted access to get to the menu from either the Customize option or control panel. Now no matter which method I use to get to the notification area options, I can make the necessary changes and updated, I see the icons that I want to see and hide the ones that I don't want to see. After I restart the computer and sign back in, all of the notification area icons are right back to how they were before I made my customizations, and I can't figure out how to prevent this from happening.

Notification Area Icon Dwell Time

Jan 16, 2011

New to Windows 7, like it a lot, but I have one thing that is driving me batty. On the taskbar, in the notification area, I have many of the standard Windows system icons, volume, power settings, wifi, hidden icons, etc. When I try to access the options in those popup notifications. the notification disappears so quickly that I don't even have time to get my cursor on it. Maybe one in five tries I can get on it before it folds, but for practical purposes trying to use those icons is hopeless. It seems like the 'puter or the OS is just too fast.I found one crackbrain suggestion to take out the battery (I have a laptop) and to press the power button a few times, and them replace battery and boot. Naturally, that solution didn't work, but I tried it anyway. There is also a suggestion about using the Ease of Use to set a time for notifications that doesn't do it. The notification area doesn't play by those rules. 5 seconds? I can't get 1/5 of a second.

Icon Notification Area Locks Computer?

Feb 25, 2012

No matter how I try to access the Icon Notification Area to customize hidden task bar icons, Win 7 freezes to a great extent. I am running 64 bit Win 7 SP1.

Under these conditions, when I put my pointer onto the task bar it changes into a hand with a pointing index finger. The Icon Notification Area will not show icons and all I get there is an interminable spinning blue circle.

The Task Manager will not correct this condition and I have to close my windows session manually with the power button. It seems something has been corrupted but I am at a loss. I have run chkdsk /f and sfc to no good effect.

I am running some 32 bit programs including MS Office Pro.

The Notifications Aren't Show In The Notification Area

Mar 31, 2012

A week ago all the notifications in the notification area stopped appear. There is no problem with icons - they all are there, but the notifications aren't display. My taskbar is set to autohide. When there must be a notification - i.e. when I disconnect a flash drive - the task bar stays for a moment (like there is a notification) and then hides, but there is no notification shown at all. The situation is the same with all other notifications.By default I work with the checked option "Always show all icons and notifications on the taskbar". I tried to uncheck this option and select "Show icon and notifications" for all icons, also tried to set "Only show notifications", with no success - the notifications aren't display under any circumstances.I tried to Reset the notification area icons cache, but this also doesn't help. Tried to turn off Aero - no change. Tried to turn On/Off "Always show all taskbar icons and notifications" using reg files from here, in both cases there are still no notifications. In fact not a single notification showed in any way for the last week.

Virtual Window Minimized To Notification Area

Jul 8, 2010

Our company runs its phones on a standard corporate IP phone system. We have a piece of software that runs on each computer to allow that person to look up extensions, place calls, manage their voice mail and so on. Unfortunately this piece of software only runs on Windows XP, not Windows 7. I was able to bypass the OS problem by running it in XP Mode on a computer and everything was going fine until someone tried to dock the bar.

In XP you can move the bar to one edge of the screen and it'll dock itself there. In Windows 7 it appears that trying to dock the window minimized it to the notification area and now it wont open up again. My question is, how do I get it back out of the notification area? The icon for the software is there and I can right-click on it to gain an action menu but there's no way to bring the window back up to access the voice mail buttons, type in names to call or the like. How I can pull a piece of software running in XP Mode out of the notification area?

No Network Icon In Notification Area For Guest Account

Jan 6, 2010

I like to enable the Guest Account on my Windows 7 computer so that my family can also use my PC for simple web surfing.

One thing that I have noticed in Windows 7 is that when in the guest account no network icon appears in the notification area (aka system tray) to tell you the status of the network connection. This is particularly annoying for me as our wireless network connection can be flaky at times (I blame the neighbours!) and it is good to be able to see the status.

Does anyone know how to enable the network status icon in the guest account?
