Can't Upgrade To 7.0
I have not been able to Upgrade to 7.0 from Vista Ultimate using the 32 bit disc.I've download the advisor, and passed all the tests, and i still get the following Windows Vista™ Ultimate cannot be upgraded to Windows 7 Ultimate. You can choose to install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate instead, but this is different from an upgrade, and does not keep your files, settings, and programs. You’ll need to reinstall any programs using the original installation discs or files.
To save your files before installing Windows, back them up to an external location such as a CD, DVD, or external hard drive. To install a new copy of Windows 7 Ultimate, click the Back button in the upper left-hand corner, and select “Custom (advanced). Doing a clean install would be quite painful, and I would probably take this as a final straw in my relationship with Microsoft, the penultimate one being Vista searches crashing Explorer.

No 'explorer' After In-place Upgrade (to Win7) From Vista Ultimate (both 64-bit)
After installing Windows 7 on a well-working VISTA Ultimate 64-bit machine with Window 7's 64-bit upgrade, a couple of hours later all seemed well - UNTIL ...The Welcome screen (normal - and in high resolution) 2550 x 1600 - then a black screen with only "Windows 7<new line> Evaluation copy, Build 7100".Never any progress after this - explorer won't load (or exits right after it loads).Ctrl-Alt-Delete brings up Windows Task Manager, and you can run virtually anything by selecting "New Task" and browsing to the appropriate executable. Office 2007, Outlook, the Internet, etc. can all be run without problem using this method. There are NO icons anywhere - no task bar - no start button - NOTHING. Have tried countless times. I cannot get to Windows Update (because there is NO start button).I DO get explorer to run in "Safe Mode" - but can't get resolution high.I did dual boot VISTA Ultimate and Windows 7 for several months. It was only when I delete the previous beta and tried to install Windows 7 that all "H" broke loose. I tried upgrading the video drivers (from ATI for 4890) and those installed OK - but can't get to the control panel for those either.I've tried everything. Explorer (NOT INTERNET EXPLORER) will not run in 'normal mode.'I don't want to do a complete reinstall on a 'clean' HD unless I have to. I can access all my data now using the Task Manager - but I have so many programs installed it would take days and days to redo everything from scratch.Any suggestions?

Installation Restart Loop After ' Upgrade Unsuccessful '
Ok, went to install the beta. First time I chose, upgrade existing windows (vista SP1). It all seems to go fine, gets to the last stage of the install process, reboots one final time, then on the startup it gets past the windows logo, and says 'starting services' etc. etc., but then I get a message that the upgrade was unsuccessful and its restoring my previous version of windows. It says do not restart the computer during this time, but the green progress bar only gets about 3/5 done and the computer reboots itself. Then it does the same exact thing, over and over. I then booted from the install CD again, and this time chose to install a new version of windows on top of the old one (says it will put the old files in windows.old). so it goes through the install operation again, everything seems fine, but when it should finally boot into the new windows, i get a message that there was some problem on startup and that I should restart my system. Except it comes back to the same message no matter how many times I restart.I'm at the point where I'd be willing to just format the drive and try again with a clean install, but I'm wondering if anyone has insight as to what is causing the problem and how I might be able to fix it. Also, before trying the 'new installation' option, I tried the reapir computer option in the install program. That comes up with 2 installations of windows -- Windows 7, and a 'windows rollback setup' or something like that. I tried doing startup repair on both of them -- windows7 one says it repaired it, the rollback one says it couldn't repair it. None of that solves it (obviously). Also, I tried going to command prompt, but that comes up as under the X: drive (which I never had), with various windows looking directories (Program Files, Windows, etc.), but tying to do a 'cd C:' just brings me back to X:.So... any ideas?

Explorer: Changing Default Path From 'Libary' To 'Computer'
I even tried replacing the quick launch icon with the Windows Explorer Desktop icon. It still thinks I need to use the libary. When I use programs like Mp3tag when I return to the menu after editing an album, I have to change the path back to the drive where I am working. Is there a way to change the default folder view from 'Library' to 'Computer' ?

Can't Do An Upgrade Install - Different Language
I'd like to do an upgrade install of Windows 7 Beta. Unfortunately, my current OS (Vista Ultimate 64) is in Italian, thus I cannot upgrade. I even tried to install the English language pack and I made sure to set the language in English. The problem is I cannot uninstall the Italian language as Windows tells me that it's the system language. Is there any way to make Windows think that English is the default language of my computer? I really don't want to make a clean install.

Post Win7 Upgrade To Do's
First off, I just migrated over to Windows 7 Forums from Vistax64 and am excited. I'm currently running Vista Home Premium 64-Bit on a Pentium i7 with 6gigs of Ram and a pretty hardcore video card. Plus, the computer is only 4 months old and i am a pretty tidy user with very little on the drive. SO: I've elected to upgrade instead of clean install. Now, I'm not looking for any responses explaining to me why I'm an idiot for upgrading instead of doing a clean install because I'm not. I am aware of the drawbacks and I'm ok with them, though they form the backdrop to my question in this post. There have been a lot of posts about why you should go for a clean install. I hope this post about upgrading gets some intelligent attention, too. Here's my question: what steps can I (and other upgrading users) take post-upgrade to minimize the "dust" from my (our) old vista OS? For example, a good registry cleaning seems like a good place to start. But what else?

Can't Connect To Wireless Router After Upgrade
I recently started using a computer with Windows 7. I have a linksys modem that is wired to a Wireless router and the computer is wired to the router. After the Windows 7 upgrade, the wireless router stopped working for both wired computers and wireless connections. If I bypass the router and run directly from the modem I get Internet connection again. I attempted to replace the wireless router with a new one and it's the same issue. I've disabled IPv6 and tried to manually configure DNS and still no go. Any thoughts on what may have gone wrong after upgrading to Windows 7 or why the router would suddenly stop working?

Can't Access Yahoo Mail After Upgrade
Has anyone else had the problem of not being able to access their email (random ones) or Yahoo! Mail's newest configuration after you upgraded to Windows 7? I have IE8, Firefox's latest and Safari and none of these browsers will allow me to access my Yahoo email, except in "classic." I spent several hours on the phone with Sony (I have a Vaio and the Windows 7 upgrade was free), and they couldn't understand why this was happeneing in each of the browsers. I sent an email to Yahoo, but I haven't heard back from them. The tech I talked to at Sony said that quite a few people had called in with the Yahoo issue. Any thoughts?

Any .exe I click on doesn't work and gives me that message. Where did my apps go and how do I get them back.

Upgrade Advisor Won't Run
I've downloaded and installed the advisor, but it won't start. And no error message at all. The privacy link works though. My PC is an Acer 8920G - a year old. .NET 3.5sp1 plus all other MS updates. OS is Vista Home Premium. Have rebooted, reinstalled, downloaded again - no different. Also checked the Event log - nothing other than saying the install was successful. The animation for the Start check button works. Then nothing. Any ideas?

Can't Change User Picture After Upgrade
I upgraded from Vista Home Premium to Windows 7 Professional. I used the Easy Transfer program to migrate my files. I reinstalled some of my software before moving my user settings back onto the system. I went in to change my User Account pictures and there is no option to save changes to either account. It shows the picture selection but no Save Changes button at the bottom of the window. I'm back to hating Microsoft unless this is my user error. (and using Windows doesn't count as an error) The upgrade has been working pretty well for Microsoft and I'm really pleased with the improved performance but get irritated by the little challenges. Any suggestions?

Sony Says I Can't Upgrade From 7 Premium To Ultimate
I am very interested in purchasing a new Sony L series ( all in one ) computer that comes with Windows 7 Home Premium installed . I had my wife call Sony the other day to find out if it could be upgraded to Ultimate and they said no because the lower end model does not come installed with Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium . Now I should mention that some of their laptops in the same price range as the L I am looking at can be ordered on-line with Ultimate installed and don't have Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, so it makes no sense to me that the model I am interested in cannot be upgraded . Anybody know or have ideas/suggestions/advice/whatever ?

Win 7 Won't Validate On Upgrade
A friend of mine called me last weekend in desperation, having had a serious multiple virus attack on her (XP Pro) PC. The system was trashed, so we decided to install Win 7. The PC came with XP Pro, and the sticky label is still on the case. However, in view of the viruses we weren't prepared to take the risk of leaving anything on the PC, so I wiped and reformatted the HD and installed "afresh". She bought an "Upgrade" edition, since she has a legitimate XP license.  I waited for "please insert your XP CD" which didn't come. Then I waited for "enter your XP validation code" which didn't come. Finally, it asked for the Win 7 validation code which it told us (with no explanation) was invalid. I phoned MS to get a telephone activation but ended up with an Indian call centre operator who hadn't a clue. Do I REALLY have to wipe the HD, reinstall XP, then upgrade?  What does that do for anyone? It'll take me best part of a day - for what? Surely it isn't beyond the wit of MS to provide the "enter the old CD" or "enter the old code" as was the case with previous upgrades and was was promised for Win 7. I read a while ago from an MS employee that
Windows 7 upgrade will be able to do a clean install as long as you have a valid and legal copy of Windows XP or Windows Vista to show during the install. A prompt will appear asking for the cd-rom and product key. Jessica Microsoft Windows Client Team
Sadly, it seems Jessica's wrong. It didn't ask for either - it just refused point-blank. The installation completed, but will not activate. What now?

Still can't upgrade because Nvidia drivers / nview desktop manager (yes, that is what it says). I have literally restarted my computer 20 times, uninstalling, reinstalling and whateverinstalling. I have no idea what to do in order to upgrade to windows 7. The drivers or my actual hardware is not letting me upgrade.

Win7 Will Not Shut Down And Can't Upgrade NVIDIA Driver
on a recently purchased HP Pavillion Dv7, quad core, laptop I can't get it to shut down and it will not go into standby either when using the Start > Shutdown the system appears to hang with the Shutting Down ... message on the screen. It eventually blue screens with a DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE errorThe .dmp files started on 12/20. There is a restore point on 12/20 that I can't seem to get to restore.I tried to upgrade the NVIDIA driver, the driver installation hung and would not complete. Also tried applying the hot fix from KB 977307. That took a very long time to install, maybe 30 minutes but did eventually complete.I will begin the process of disabling drivers and such next, but was hoping there might be another clue that I am missing. The restore point indicates that some HP software was updated, so, that would seem to be the first thing to disable / reinstall.Thank you,-jdPS: Other than this it's been a great machine and OS. Good job. Best version one of Windows yet.

Can't Install Matrox Driver After Win 7 Upgrade
I have a Matrox M9120 PCIe x16 graphics card. It was running fine in Vista x64 with the 1.0.3.35 driver. I ran the Windows 7 x64 upgrade, and everything seemed to be OK until I discovered that I couldn't open Windows Media Center or view DVDs or other videos. I tried to upgrade to the latest Matrox driver, which supports Windows 7, but the old driver wouldn't uninstall. I contacted Matrox tech support and was advised that I should have uninstalled the old Matrox driver BEFORE upgrading to Windows 7. They said that Windows 7 has locked in the old driver but cannot recognize it so that it can be uninstalled because it is not a Windows 7 compatible driver. They added that the ONLY solution is to do a clean install of Windows 7. This is outrageous. No such information appears on the Matrox website, and Matrox did not notify me of the terrible consequences of upgrading to Windows 7 without uninstalling the Matrox driver even though I registered the M9120 with them last January and provided my email address. Matrox knows that every customer faces a potential disaster when upgrading to Windows 7 but covers up the mess rather than notifying registered owners of the simple step to take prior to upgrading. I'm not going to do a clean install but will use the Matrox card without the ability to play videos for the time being in the hope that some smart techie will figure out how to uninstall the old Matrox driver from Windows 7. If that doesn't happen, I'll buy some other fanless video card and replace the partially functional Matrox card.

Upgrade From Vista Installer Won't Run
I am trying to upgrade to Win7 RC from Vista. When I run the installer, I get an error "Cannot access network resource" and get asked for a password. I have an admin account but enter my logon details but then get a further error saying "windows can't access "g:setup". I can access that disk drive fine normally and the installer works if it boot to it, but I want to do upgrade rather than clean install. I've also tried 'run as administrator'- same error.

Upgrade / Virtual Memory Service Can't Start
I am trying to upgrade my son's laptop from Vista to Windows 7. My son's computer is a Toshiba Qosmio and I ran the Toshiba Upgrade Tool with no problems. The problem I have now is that the virtual memory service is not starting so when I start the install of windows 7, I get the error "windows could not retrieve information about disks on this computer". I tried to manually start the service and get the error "service failed to start". If I put it on automatic, it just stays on "starting". Obviously, this is not allowing windows 7 to see my disks. Disk management does not show my disks due to virtual memory service not being able to start. The computer is ready for the upgrade, just can't get passed this problem. I don't want to use the recovery disks if I can help it.

Can't Print Office 2007 In Upgrade Win 7
Just upgraded to Windows 7 64 bit on a Vista 64 bit machine. Office 2007 was working fine prior to install. Now Word and Excel will not print on my Xerox Phaser 6280N. I have uninstalled and reinstalled drivers three times. The download from Xerox does have a challenge installing - gives me an error - but I can still find the updated drivers and install them when I reinstall the printer (set up as a networked printer on my router). However, I can print Acrobat Files as well as WordPad files! No problem printing a test page either. As I said, I have updated the drivers so they should work fine with Windows 7.

Windows Upgrade Advisor Won't Install
Trying to install Win 7 Upgrade Advisor on a two-year old Vista machine (DELL XPS 420). Clicking the setup icon to install gets me nothing. No installation screens, no warnings, no errors, nothing. I tried installing on an older XP laptop and the software installs there just fine. I've checked the other related topics and they seem to be related to problems installing on XP, not Vista. Any ideas what I'm missing? I've never encountered an installation that fails before it even starts.

Upgrade From Vista, Won't Finish Install
I've tried four times to upgrade my vista 64 bit to windows 7, everytime it gets to about 62% complete it just stays there. I'll leave it running for two days and it just won't finish. I've have over five thousand my lastest build, and it all runs great on Vista 64. The compatibility wizard shows no issue before I start the upgrade. If I boot to the CDrom first with the windows 7, it starts coping the disc and then I get the Friggin BLUE Screen, everytime. I've been building sytems for over fifteen years, I've owned every kind of windows ever made. I've probably paid for Bill Gates car (one of them anyway).I could do a clean install, but I don't want to pay for all the software I've installed again.
