Build 7100 To Retail Upgrade

Aug 12, 2009

I have Vista x64 right now and I keep wanting to install the 7100 build beta that I downloaded a while back. I plan to buy the 3 pack of Windows 7 when it comes out but I am wondering if installing the beta build now will make upgrading harder down the road. Doing a clean install is just way to hard considering all the terrabytes of programs and data that I would have to either re-install or manually try to put back into it's original places.

I know a lot of people preach that doing clean installs is so much better. In my experience this has never really helped. I have on numerous occasions done clean installs and they never did seem to work any better or any faster than the upgrades that I have had installed for years. The only time I think you need to do a clean install is if you have stability issues with your hardware causing your OS to go flaky or if you neglect your OS and leave all kinds of crap floating around on it. We have one machine running Windows 2000 since 2000 and it is used daily without any problems or corruption whatsoever.

Upgrade From Build 7100 To Build 7264

Aug 2, 2009

I am currently running OS 7 Beta RC Build 7100. Were do I get this newer version, is there a big difference? And am I able to upgrade to the newer Beta?

I realize that October is fast approaching for the RTM but I plan to keep running the Beta for a couple of months past the Grand Opening.

Is it possible that all the updates that I have received equally add up to the newer build?

Upgrade WIN XP Or Downgrade 7 RC Build 7100

Oct 23, 2009

I don't post often, but I do read a lot, and there is a lot of good info here. Background: I am running a dual boot Win XP (32 bit) and Win 7 RC 7100 (32 bit). I have the Digital River WIN Pro Upgrade (32 bit). I have read the UNAWAVE downgrade scenario from Ultimate to Pro and the WIN XP to WIN 7 PRO upgrade here.

I am debating which OS to change. I really like the RC version and have been using it for quite a while. But since it is my main OS, I would hate to screw it up doing the downgrade as suggested by UNAWAVE.

If I upgrade the WIN XP OS, I am not sure If I would still be able to dual boot between WIN 7 RC and WIN 7 Pro.

If I do upgrade XP to PRO, would I be able to use WET to transfer my settings from RC to PRO. I am leaning towards the downgrade option, but wanted some more input from the "experts".

Vaio With Win 7 RC Build 7100 Upgrade To Release Version

Oct 26, 2009

I bought a Sony Vaio laptop with Vista and a promised upgrade to Windows 7 when officially released. To jump start, I installed Windows 7 RC Build 7100 from Microsoft over the shipped Vista OS.

I just received the promised Windows 7 upgrade fulfillment from Sony but when I try to install it it tells me that Windows 7 is already installed (duh.)

Is the RC based Windows 7 installation that I've built up over the last few months now junk bits or is there a way to use the serial number on the proof of license sticker on the fulfillment install disk Sony sent me and associate it with my current RC installation to make it legal and avoid any future trouble?

I'd ask Sony but they haven't responded to anything else I've asked about so I'm not sure there are any actual people left in their "service" arm.

Vista + Win 7 Retail Disk To Upgrade Win 7 RC To Retail

Jul 11, 2009

can i somehow use my vista disc at some point to allow the Windows 7 retail install to upgrade the Windows 7 RC AND NOT HAVE TO REINSTALL MY PROGRAMS?

i currently have vista 32 bit home premium. i have the install discs for it too.

i want to create another partition and put Windows 7 RC 64 bit on it (dual boot).

i have Windows 7 home premium pre ordered.

i want to upgrade Windows 7 RC to the retail when it comes out, WITHOUT REINSTALLING MY PROGRAMS.

i read the Windows 7 retail discs will allow you to upgrade the Windows 7 RC, but you will have to reinstall programs.

i am wondering if using the vista disc will allow me to upgrade and keep my programs.

W7 Upgrade Retail Vs Full Version Retail

Feb 12, 2010

I was looking at getting windows 7 and hoping to do clean installs on a couple of machines and don't know which version to choose. I was looking at the w7 professional upgrade because I read that you can do a clean install with the upgrade disc and it's cheaper but I was not sure because I have an xp pro upgrade disc which says in the manual you can do a clean install but I could not (tried to put it on my laptop and do a clean install over vista but wouldn't let me.)

If you can do that, what is the difference between an upgrade clean install and the regular install disc? My other question is, if I buy the full retail version how many machines can I install it on and will they go into non genuine mode after the product key is used once?

i'm wondering if it could be because its an old beta microsoft have decided to stop it from working?

Build 7100 Aero Error

May 2, 2009

I just installed Windows 7 on my Sony VGN-BZ560. I have a very strange error. After a certain period of time and programs (which seems to be random) the window borders will disappear and it will become a strange blue.

This is a stock install using the Intel 45 Graphics driver in the RC build. Anyone know any solutions? I've googled but come up pretty empty.

W7 RC Build 7100 - Backup Freezes At 7%

Jul 13, 2009

for the last week i've had issues with the native backup on Windows 7. IT gets to around 7% and then just freezes.

The action centre flag keeps saying backup in progress, but i've left it all night and come back the next morning and it's still at 7%

I've got a 500gb drive which I use for backups and other stuff and it's got enough capacity. I have deleted the old windows backup folder on it and still no joy.

I look at 'show details' and all I get is yet another bigger progress bar with 'creating a shadow copy' as the only information.

Do I have a corrupt file perhaps?

BSOD On Win7 X64 Build 7100

Nov 3, 2009

I've recently replaced my Win7 (7100) x32 with the x64 version in order to make use of more memory (not yet installed). However, although the rig I'm using had no problems in x32, it keeps BSODing in x64. Are there any commonly known reasons for BSODs in x64 when not in x32?

I have all drivers installed, updated and seemingly working. I get a BSOD within about 20 mins of booting usually. No temp issues with CPU - all under 30 idle and BSOD isn't necessarily when the CPU is stressed.

Specs:

Quad Core 2.4 Q6600
Asus P5K Mobo
Asus 8800GTX
2*1Gb Corsair XMS2

Audigy SB 1394 Driver Win7 Build 7100

May 16, 2009

I'm looking for a soundcard driver for my older Audigy SB 1394, using Win 7 Build 7100. I was able to get the sound working using Build 7000, but have been unsuccessful with the latest Win 7 Beta.

I think I've tried five or six drivers, and none have worked.

It doesn't appear that Win 7 is even recognizing that I have a soundcard, which could be the real problem. I tried moving the card to a different slot and running a hardware search, but nothing has worked.

Upgrade From 7100 To 7127 X64

May 18, 2009

I am having lots of small problems after upgrading from 7100 to 7127. I am using x64 and since the time I have upgraded, the whole machine has become extremely slow.

Earlier it used to be extremely quick in bootup and shutdown etc. Now it takes almost double the time to startup and shutdown. I am using a 256GB SSD and it is making a major difference in speed now.

I am planning to do a fresh install of 7127 x64 but any ideas guys?

Upgrade From 7100 To 7201 X86

Jun 10, 2009

I've got windows 7 V7100 running on my dell D600 and when i attempt to upgrade it to 7201 x86 it fails saying it can find winload.exe.

i have my drive setup like this

100mb windows parition. ( from the orginal 7100 install on a blank hdd)

58G OS drive where Windows 7 is installed ( 7100)

239G Apps Parition ( labeled F & Installed as mounted volume as media)

from what i gathered the upgrade tries to use F: as the setup from the upgrade ( i have tried via USB & just extracting it to C:Windows 7 or F:Windows 7 - it asks the same Question ) and if i edit the BCD with EasyBCD the upgrade seems to point to F:

Should i just remove the 100Mb and 58G partitions and reload in one parition ? ie fresh install and leave the upgrade alone.... ?

Activated RC 7100 - CAN I Use WIN 7 UPGRADE Or Not?

I am confused. Do I buy an UPGRADE or a RETAIL???

I'd really like one simple answer PLEASE to one simple question...CAN I BUY and use an UPGRADE H/Prem Windows 7 to do an inplace UPGRADE of a legally downloaded and activated RC7100? I take it if YES, I have to put in the ISO disc I originally burned as "proof" of originally installed OS?

Full Upgrade, Retail Or OEM

Jul 8, 2009

Are all the pre-order deals for upgrade software rather the full retail versions?

I have shelled out quite a bit on WinXP over the past few years and more recently due to both desktop and laptop falling over at the same time.

I want to be able to install any new operating system I buy on new hardware when that becomes necessary.

I have to be very sure. I am not wasting any more dosh on OEM versions.

It seems to me that just because you get a full version rather than an upgrade, that is something different to the license being OEM or Retail.

Full or upgrade version is not really the issue (although full is obviously better). For me it is about the license to install on new hardware as I upgrade that without buying a new copy of windows.

Does 'full' also mean that the install will not be tied to a previous copy of windows being installed first (or having the key for that version to hand)?

Xp Retail Or Xp Oem To Upgrade To Win7

Oct 5, 2009

i use xp pro sp2 retail on my main well gaming rig. i ordered the Windows 7 hp upgrade and will ship 10-22-09.

if i read right. when i upgrade to Windows 7 my key for my retail xp pro sp2 will be no more good. i will not be able to install or use my retail xp again. is this right?

well. a bud sent me a oem sp3 copy of xp pro some months ago. its still sealed and i never opened the package. i am afraid of sp3 is why i have not used it yet. so.. but. my question is and if i will lose my retail xp key if i upgrade to Windows 7. should i upgrade to Windows 7 using my oem xp sp3 disc. and keep my retail key etc.

so. id guess first i need to back up and save what i need to keep. files etc. then nuke reformat and install my oem xp. just basic install and i guess register it. and then upgrade fresh install Windows 7. if this will work im fine with it. yes its the extra steps to first install the oem xp version maybe. but id like to save my retail xp key. i do have another computer i guess i could use xp on for a while to come. i have not been using my second pc. ive been afraid to install or use xp sp3.. so i have not used my oem xp sp3 yet.

I now have another computer that I want to put Windows 7 pro on. I am thinking about purchasing an upgrade key and just using the retail version to install so I don't have to reinstall Vista in order to do the upgrade.

Anyways, do you think I could purchase an upgrade key, install with my retail disk without filling out the product key and then activate with the upgrade key?

Retail (upgrade) Key Question

I was just consulted on by a teacher who had a student that purchased Windows 7 and just received it in the mail. It was an upgrade, he couldn't find a product key. He was wondering if your current os's product key doubled as your 7 key. I would assume it wouldn't, and he just over looked Microsoft's master of disguise product keys.
