Black Screen Before Logon / Cannot Boot

I've had this issue multiple times -- usually startup repair restores to an earlier point, but it appears that the system did not create a new restore point in between the past two times this occurred, so currently I can't boot to 7.After the "Starting Windows" screen with the glowing logo, I simply get a black screen with the mouse on it (which I can control). An interesting thing I noticed is that when it gets to the black screen, the backlight on my screen dims. I can't bring up task manager, anything. End up just having to hard restart the laptop.

Black Screen Of Death On Logon
you guys wouldn't know a fix for a Windows 7 RTM Ultimate every time they logon its a black screen but they can see the logon screen until it goes to the desktop. I'm pretty sure its the video card driver or the video card itself.

Computer Type: Desktop

Video Card Type: ATI Radeon 4870

Works in safe mode with internet

Alt Ctrl Del works but doesn't show taskmanager Cannot logout only shutdown.

Fresh install (today)

Tried reinstalling the vista driver and then the windows 7 driver.

I heard something about BIOS could be a factor but i don't think so.

Upon Startup, Black Screen With Mouse, No Logon Screen
Okay, I did my research, but it hasn't helped.  I've tried:

1.  F8, enable low resolution video (didn't work)

2.  F8, safe mode (didn't work)

3.  F8, last known good (didn't work)

4.  Startup repair (didn't work) Anybody got other ideas?

I can't login at all as I don't ever get a login screen.

Remote Desktop, After Logon, Black Screen
I am able to Remote Desktop fine from a laptop running Windows 7 into my desktop running Windows 7, the problem is that once I LOGOFF (or disconnect) and go to my desktop, all I see is a black screen with the mouse movement. CTRL-ALT-DEL does nothing. I can go back to the laptop and RD into my desktop and it lets me login just fine.

But I have restart the system again by pressing the POWER BUTTON (soft, not hard 4 sec) and it goes to shut down, with nothing to show on the screen other than black and mouse cursor. anything I'm doing wrong?

Black Logon Screen On Hibernate Only, Resolved By Unplugging Monitor
After running Windows 7 RC since June I have encountered a problem over the last week which I am unable to resolve.  If I boot the machine from Hibernate mode the logon screen appears black.  The monitor is receiving signal, but it is not displaying anything. If I unplug the monitor from the back of the computer and plug it back in then Windows 7 makes its installing new hardware sound and the logon screen appears.

I do not experience this black screen when using Sleep mode or a standard Shutdown, only Hibernate.  I have only recently experienced this problem and can only assume it was caused by a recent Windows 7 update, as I have not installed any new hardware etc.

I am running an Intel Core 2 duo and Nvidia 8600GTS on a 17" Illyama LCD monitor.  It is a single monitor setup.  I have tried installing the latest Nvidia drivers and this has not affected the situation.  Does anyone have any idea what has broken hibernate mode on my PC?

Black Screen Instead Of Logon Screen
I use the bios selection to boot from either drive A or B.I use Windows dual-boot menu on drive B to select between Vista and 7RC.

The black screen problem was first observed with both the 32-bit and the 64-bit versions of the Beta distributed at the Installation Festival. I had taken only one monitor to the festival and everything appeared to be working fine then. Once home, I noticed that I had no sound. I downloaded drivers for my SPXFI card and got sound but, got the black screen on reboot. I asumed that the SB driver was the cause. I had configured the Display on DVI 2 as my main display.

I then tried the 32-bit version with the same results. I had purchased a brand new 1TB drive for my Win 7 experimentation. I had disabled my main drive (A) throught the BIOS for installation. I hastily concluded that W7 was not quite ready for my system. I installed Vista Home Premium on my B drive using the same method and everything worked fine.

When RC was announced, I downloaded the 64-bit version, created a partition on my B drive and installed it there while my A drive was disabled from the BIOS. Installation went fine but I encountered the same black screen problem on the final reboot. However, I observed the odd disk activity and did not want to turn of the computer while this was going on. I tried Ctrl-Alt-Delete and other things and managed to get some voice from the computer.

I had activated the Access functionality from the invisible logon screen. I did another Ctrl+Alt+Delete, typed my password and followed by Enter. The monitor connected to DVI 1 immediately came on. I did not have a menu bar because I had specified the other monitor as my primary one. A right-click on the screen brought up the contextual menu, from which I selected Personalize > Display > Change display settings.

Clicking the "Detect" button turned on the second monitor. I plan on altering my connection so that my main display will be on DVI 1 instead of 2. In the mean time, I will blind-type my password and restore the settings.

Black Screen On First Boot
I have installed Windows 7 on another hard drive which is partitioned to 40 gb using Acronis disk director. The installation went fine and as it went through the boot-ups, I had screen but on the final boot the screen is black apart from the os version in the bottom right hand corner. My cursor can be seen too.

Anyone have any ideas please? Is it a graphics driver issue?

Black Screen On Boot Up (sometimes)
i'd say it does that 3 times out of 10... Lappy starts, if i see the flashing cursor on the upper left corner before Windows logo appears, i know it will work. No cursor = no logo and no boot. Solution? Power off and back on 'til it works. I usually get good results when i hit F9 and choose manually to boot from hard drive even though it's already set this way in bios boot up priority.

It never did that from Windows 7 versions 7022-7048 on my 5400rpm fujitsu drive but it does happen since i installed 7077, and now RC, all clean installs, on my new seagate momentus 7200.3...

Has anyone ever experienced this?

Black Screen And Message On W7 Boot
When I turn my machine on I get the Windows logo, then the screen goes black and a text message advising me that a disk check is occurring, and if I want to skip it I have to hit any key in X... seconds. If I let it run, it eventually goes to all black on the screen, the disk runs and runs - I let it run for two days once - and nothing happens.

If I "hit any key" as instructed it goes to the Windows boot and all appears to be well. I guess I shouldn't complain, but I really hate the whole "disk check" screen thing, and would like to get rid of it. How can I do that?

Black (Blank) Screen After Boot
So I have been using Windows 7 RC for over a month now, and yesterday, after a reboot, Windows 7 booted up to a black screen, with only a movable cursor. Nothing else happens for over 2 hours. Not even Ctrl Alt Delete works. I've also tried startup repair, last know good configuration, safe mode, safe mode with networking. They all get the same results: Windows 7 booting up to a black screen with only the cursor and nothing else...

Black Screen Boot Issue
A few weeks ago I tried to watch a dvd in windows media center. The program failed to load and the computer froze, I had no choice but to power down the computer by holding down the power button.  After doing that I tried to restart the computer upon restart all I can see is a black screen. I have tried numerous times to get the boot options menu by pressing F8 immediately at startup with various such as (safe mode, start windows normally, etc.).  Unfortunately, I am not able to get the boot options menu like I described and after about maybe 15 seconds of pressing F8 the computer restarts itself again.

Is there anything else I can try since the computer does not seem to respond at all when I try pressing F8?  I have also tried pressing spacebar continually because I read on the Internet that this might also help but it does not.  Bottom line, I have a black screen and windows keeps rebooting about every 15 seconds neither pressing F8 nor spacebar immediately at startup seems to help.  Any suggestions??

Currently my computer is not in any working order.

For the time that I was able to use Windows 7 I really enjoyed it!

Black Screen At Boot With My Mouse Cursor
I have a problem when booting up Windows 7.

When I boot, I see the 4 particles, but after that, i get a black screen with my mouse cursor, but that's all.

If i wait for about 7 minutes, i get the login screen and everything works fine.

I haven't installed anything or done anything that could cause this.

Is this normal? I hope not because i hate waiting :P

I have read some other topics that seemed to be almost the same problem as mine. Some say you have to get a new videodriver. have done that, didn't

work. Restoring to a restore point didn't work either.

Any suggestions?

EDIT: Forgot to say, it is a dual boot (win xp/win 7) (maybe usefull information)

Black Screen With Only A Cusor Showing On Boot Up
I have a dual boot Vista 64 and windows 7 RC 64 bit. When I boot into windows 7,  I get a black screen with only a cusor showing, the same apply's in safe mode and command promt. Would this have anything to do with Nivida drivers 186.18 ? I don't think they installed correctly,  I also  installed nHancer, which I tweaked for FSX. Is there a solution ? Vista works fine.

Black Screen W/no Info In Boot Sequence
I've noticed an issue which can be disconcerting to users at bootup time.  After I boot the machine, I get the windows logo for a little while, then  the screen goes completely black and there is no disk activity for at least a minute, sometimes more.  If you are patient and don't panic, the  disk activity  starts again and the login screen appears.

Three comments:I'm assuming this period of time when the screen is blank is related to network or USB discoveryA black screen with no information is not a good user interface. This activity makes the total boot time very long.Does anyone know what's happening here?

Dual Boot Problem With Win 7 - Black Screen
Installed 7 RC as a dual boot with xp.  All went well after driver updating etc.  The problem I am having is that after choosing the os at startup, and seeing the initial boot screen the display goes black (not off). The startup continues 'underneath' as I can hear the startup sounds etc and the HDD is still spinning, but I cannot get the screen to come back on.

The only way I have found to solve the problem is after start up when everything settles down, is to put the system into sleep mode, then wake it up.  Once I do this, I am greeted with the login screen as you would expect. This happens when booting to xp or 7.Have have heard of two others with the same problem but no fixes as yet.  Have tried doing repairs with both the appropriate install discs but have had no luck.Any advice?

Black Screen On Boot Up Of Win7 Home Premium 64 Bit
I purchased a new computer with Windows 7 64 bit home premium installed on it in early November 2009. In late November I started to get a black screen on my monitor every time I booted up my computer and still get it to this very day.

The black screen lasts for up to 10 minutes before the login page comes up. During black screen, I cannot ctrl, alt, del or even use the F8 upon boot up. There is no logo appearing on the screen at any time and it stay's black until the login page appears. I have tried rebooting the computer but still get the black screen.

Any solutions to remedy this problem would be greatly appreciated as the black screen is lasting longer and is very annoying to say the least.

Screen Becomes Corrupted And Logon Screen Changed Color
This is so strange. My screen resolution is corrupted and my logon screen changed from Green to Blue.

Steps:
1) Using Office Word 2007, Outlook 2007, IE 8 Beta, and Live Messenger on Windows 7
2) Pressed Ctrl + Alt + Delete to lock my computer

Observation:
1) Screen is corrupted (resolution becomes 640 x 480 from 1280 x 800 and colors become 16 bits)
2) Logon screen is now Blue instead of Green

I was able to change the resolution of the screen. However, still don't know how to switch my logon back to Green color.

Several Blue Screens, Right After Boot Or Logon
Since I've installed Windows 7 on my PC I've been getting several bluescreens with different messages on boot or right after logon. I've been trying to find solutions to them on the web, but I can't find solutions that seem to be related to my problem(s). Below is an excerpt from WinDbg, I can provide them in full if there might be anything more that is relevant in them, but I don't want to flood this forum unnecessarily.

Is there somebody on here that might be able to point me in the right direction to finding solutions to my problem(s)?

Is There A Logon Screen Screensaver ?
In XP & Vista a Windows screensaver would turn on after a short while if the system was left on the user[s] log-in screen. At least with my installation of Windows 7 RC1, this does not appear to be the case. if left on that screen, nothing ever happens. Is this WAD? And, if so, is there any way to turn it on?

No Screensaver On Logon Screen
My wife and I each have user accounts and we "Switch User" back and forth all the time, and sometimes leave it at the logon screen with our two icons to click on.

In XP, the screensaver would run on the logon screen, but I'm noticing that nothing happens from the logon in 7. We have use the photo screensaver which makes it a digital picture frame of sorts, but if you leave it at the logon, you'll come back an hour later to see our two icons waiting for you.

Has the screensaver on logon been removed or is there a configuration I'm missing?
