Whe transfering 4 files from a thumb drive to my vista system.or visa versataks a very long time...much longer that on my xp system. I addition I am asked to varify my actions each timewhic slows things down even more.

What kind of copy speed can one expect? I get like 20MB/s which seems slow (copy on the same HDD)? (but still faster than copy and past when i got 2MB/s). I need to change my account name and therefor I need to copy my whole user folder of 90 GB and it takes forever. Is there something I can do to speed things up?

I am trying to do the download at night when I'm sleeping so it's the only thing occupying bandwidth. For whatever reason, while the transfer is in progress, my system will fall asleep. My power settings are the defaults, so what do I need to change to make the system not sleep when it's active?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been trying to get the File Transfer Manager program to work with Vista SP1. The only way I can get it to work is if I turn off UAC. Otherwise I receive an error "Unable to open file on client". I found the "workaround" about creating a folder, but this doesn't work. I've tried both the ActiveX install, and manually downloading and installing FTM. (The manual download route doesn't work with UAC on or off.) Also with UAC on, the program won't save any settings. (Also turned off popup blocking), and the ActiveX settings in IE7 are correct. (Looked at during a tech support call). So, what am I missing? Gotta be a way to make it work with UAC on....?

View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been pulling my hair out trying to figure out why I can't get decent file transfer speeds between my two Vista machines (Home Premium x64 SP1 and Ultimate 32bit SP1). If I attempt to transer a 1GB file between the two Vista machines I get about 14MB/s, however if I transfer the same file between either of those machines and my Mac laptop it get about 40MB/s. So far I've tried the following to no affect: the steps mentioned in the Window Auto Tuning tutorial but it didn't seem to help. tried transfering the file between the two Vista machines using FileZilla (a free FTP server) and that showed the same slow network speeds. changed over the network cables to brand new CAT6 cables but that didn't help.

In one of their few areas of consistency, both said I needed to install WET on the old XP computer, which I did by downloading form the MS website. On my first attempt, my new computer said the files created on my portable hard disk by my old computer running WET could not be read. They had be copied as read only and could not be read evenafter I changed that attribute. On my second attempt, WET on my new computer told me that the DAT files created by the old one were created by an earlier WET version and could not be transferred. But I installed WET AFTER I bought the new computer from the allegedly up-to-date MS website.

I may want to transfer a WAV speech file from my recorder to my computer, where it might wind up being converted to a text file by Marty's "WSRToolkit". Have not decided yet whether or not to buy the toolkit. Does the cable plug into the computers USB socket? ....or into the earphone mini plug of the computer. (the so-called "line-in" mini plug) Do not want to buy Marty's "H2" digital recorder, as my DS-5000 is far superior to the H2.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a problem when transferring files across my LAN. I have a Windows Vista Premium 32-bit PC connected to a D-Link DIR-655 router. The router then connects to my ISP. I also have a network storage device (Drobo with Droboshare).I am attempting to transfer files too and from my PC to the Drobo. At times the PC network connection is freezing, usually mid-file transfer. I can reproduce this also when transferring files to another PC. It can be triggered either when sending a large file (2gb) or when sending many small to medium size files (i.e. a photo collection).
The network interface on the PC shows as 'Local only'. In the IP settings it still shows that it is assigned an IP from the router. If I try to repair the connection it fails. I cannot disable the connection. I cannot ping any other PC or network device, nor ping or connect to the router. I have to reboot the PC at which point it works as normal. If I test using my laptop (Windows XP) when this issue occurs it can connect to other PC's, the network devices and the internet perfectly. The router shows no errors in it's log, from the router point of view the connection is available. Any advice on how to fix this or even how to progress on diagnosing it? This is so frustrating as I bought a network storage device and right now it is useless and I cannot transfer files to/from it successfully.
Will Windows Easy Transfer work with only XP? I'm getting a new laptop before my old one stops working and I don't want to move to Vista. I just want to move XP pro to XP pro.

I have two internal hard drives, not raid, and an external eSATA drive. All 3 are the same size, 500GB. View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Vista 64x workstation since Nov 08 which has been fine until recently. It has started having network problems when accessing large numbers of files from remote locations. I have a readyNAS network storage device with a number of shares which are mounted as network drives on the PC, wired ethernet. Vista is set up as a private network and set to trust the LAN. The readynas is flawless when accessed from other XP and Vista machines on the LAN.
Recent example, tried loading on photos from a camera, approx 700 files. Went fast at first, but over 300 files, copying would slow to a crawl - 16Kb. While this is happening, other LAN access and internet access becomes intermittent. If I use picasa, which accesses all photos on the remote drive, it'll work for a while but then crawl, only in this case the whole machine slows down. I've tried disabling auto-tuning but that made no difference.
I just bought a new pc with Vista Home Premium, it came with: 1GB PC2-6400 DDR2 SDRAM, expandable to 4GB. I wanted more memory so I bought a 2GB kit PC2-*5300* DDR2 SDRAM, because it was on sale for $60. The 6400 speed would have cost me over $200. The salesman assured me it would work fine and I wouldn't notice any difference. I installed it when I got home and everything works great, no problems. But I still can't stop wondering if the difference in speed WOULD matter. Can anyone explain, or provide a link explaining, when, if ever, I would benefit from the faster memory. I mostly use my PC for surfing the web, email, and some photo editing.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have Vista x64 Ultimate and I'm having internet connection issues. My laptop is the HP Pavillion dv7. My ISP tells me everything is fine on his end. I have a router (Linksys model BEFW11S4) 2.4 Ghz - 802.11b. When I connect the wire from my modem directly to my laptop, I get internet speeds of 900 Kbps. But when I use the router, the speed goes down to 300 Kbps. Is there a setting in Vista that could be doing this? According to Linksys, I should be able to attain 900 Kbps with the router. The laptop comes with a wireless adapter (Intel Wi-Fi Link 5100AGN).
View 8 Replies View RelatedI am attempting to transfer files & settings using the Belkin Easy Transfer cable from an XP computer to a Vista computer. All starts well by showing that the two computers are connected. But after finding the files and settings and providing the amount of data to be transferred, it starts gathering information but then shows a flashing disconnection icon in the upper right of both computers' transfer windows and freezes. This happens at a different place each time, but early in the procedure (after about 10 minutes). Would anyone have any advice? I have done everything by the book, as far as I'm aware.

1) Most of my programs in the Start menu are missing. Below are some of the examples:
a) Under "Accessories", I can only see Bluetooth File Transfer Wizard, Command Prompt and Run.
b) Under "Games", I can only see Game Explorer
c) Many programs shortcut like Window Defender, etc are missing.
d) I still do not know what else are missing.
2) Windows take some time to shut down and startup and also running of programs...........
I installed the following ram on my PC OCZ Reaper HPC 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500) Dual Channel Kit Desktop Memory - Retail.
I have also installed the NVIDIA system monitor.
My question:
Why does my computer recognize the RAM at 800mhz (this shows on boot up and in the Nvidia monotor) when my motherboard supports 1066 and the ram is also 1066.
I have a p7n diamond 780i motherboard from MSI.
I still see the spinning wheel and can't do a thing until it goes away. I double click and MP3 file spinning wheel until Winamp fires up, which used to take no time now I don't know what it's doing but takes longer and still can't do anything with a $800 computer until the wheel stops turning.

The double click is so fast, that 95% of the time is performs a double click when I did not want it to. This is SO damn annoying. It is an older Microsoft mouse with the light and wheel and buttons on the side for going back and forth in Explorer and on the Internet. I think it was called Intellipoint, or something like that. Anyhow, does anyone know if this is a bug?

i have reloaded window last night every think has gone fine and the computer is just as fast as it use to be BUT i have updated my wei and it came back with 5.9 for every think but the cpu which use to be 5.9 but now is 5.4. i then installed cool and quit of the asus driver disc to find that it says it is runing 1300 and not 2600 which is what the cpu is but if you go into the bios it says it is runing 2600 and the clock timing is set to auto i have manualy put in 2600 in on the seting but cool and quite still see it as runing 1300 . like ive said the system does not sem and slower but i would like to now what is wrong. i have update the bios and the cool and quite to the lateist one.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a trusty laptop running Vista Ultimate with 2 Gb RAM. When I first got it it ran programmes like Mozilla Firefox and the Office Suite rapidly, opening the apps quickly when required. Over time programmes began to slow down upon opening. I also tried the new Windows 7 which was OK but had a few drawbacks. So I bit the bullet and re-set my machine back to how it was when it was new.
Reloaded my apps and data files, speed returned. Now it's slowing up again after only 4 months. do these proprietary programs like Norton etc actually clean up the computer and restore its trusty speed in opening apps? If so, which one have you found to be the best in practice?
I tried to disable a lot of things without any success... (phising filter, protected mode etc) ex. www.pcinpact.com will take 10 second to load firefox 3 it will take 1 second and there is a lot of websites that behave the same way WHY IS Ie7 so slow ?? it doesn't make sense to be 10x slower on some pages
