Disabled Admin And Stuck, Cannot Reinstall

Mar 23, 2008

I accidentally disabled the Admin check box and now with my ID as being a Standard User I cannot even install or remove any old items on my install. This is a terrible waste of time for many people. XP was never like this... I was only messing around with testing what one button does... I have tried everything from turning off UAC, registry fix... but all said: "ACCESS DENIED"... what to do now??? I cannot undo nor reinstall everything again.

Admin Logon UAC Disabled

Apr 8, 2009

I recently did a clean install of Vista Ultimate. When I ran setup it asked for a name and choose a picture. Every start-up since then brought me directly to my desktop. I installed Office Ultimate a few days ago and now when I start up it consistently takes me to the welcome screen and forces me to choose "Administrator" or the name I typed during install. I have UAC disabled, but I'm not sure that has an impact here as it booted fine before. Outside of system restore, is there a way to regain my 'normal' start-up again?

Wrong Username Is STUCK On Admin

Mar 23, 2008

My wife tried to change the Username on the computer i put together for her. The only problem is that she changed the name somehow but it didn't change it in the OS. That is, when i go in through another user account it says the ORIGINAL name under users, NOT the name she made. Now the PROBLEM is that when the OS boots up it has her NEW name (that somehow didn't take), written in for the Admin account but the PASSWORD for the ORIGINAL account is the SAME (i.e. the password hint is the same as what i had made it originally).

Now the problem is that i can't change the USERNAME and there IS NO password for the name she made, cause it didn't take halfway through the process she said. The question is, how do i change the Username to the original name. that is, to the ACTUAL user name that is listed under users (the name she made is NOT listed under users).

Can't Reinstall/fix Stuck

Aug 27, 2009

I turn it on and get a message saying to insert the DVD to fix a system registry error. ( I don't remember what message it was sorry) So I do and windows boots. I backed up my files that night. Next day windows is acting weird and sluggish, if I try to open my computer or documents PC freezes, it takes a long time to boot and 8 times out of ten will hang on the green loading bar or take an hour to load, my sound card deleted itself as did my cdrom drive. Safe mode either takes forever to boot or will freeze when loading drivers, I tried to re store/reinstall and boot from the vista DVD at startup but i get the message "The file is possibly corrupt. The file header check sum does not match the computed check sum" or "couldn't find boot manager". This happens for the x64 vista disk, x32 disk and my XP pro disk. I tried to reformat in safe mode command prompt and it said Formatting the partition was prohibited. I thought it was my ram at first so bought new ram but still the same problem. I'm also not sure what caused this I do regular virus checks with up to date software, maybe its a bad windows update?

When i open word theres no line blip thing and when I type there is nothing. The only way I can type is if I open a template or an existing document. I tried highlighting but nothing is highlighted. I tried going on print preview to see if anything is even there but there's nothing.

I have just added a new router on my computer. I am still having trouble with a laptop upstairs. On the laptop utility card it says encryption disabled. Is this a problem with my computer or their laptop? If it is what can I do? I just had my system crash and had it fixed at Future Shop. Everything works fine but the upstairs computer.

SP1: DISABLED In The Startup

Mar 24, 2008

After a long debate with myself, I went ahead and downloaded SP1 for my old system. I had installed a new Logitech camera that was using the Lv? .exe driver or something. Anyway, unplugged the camera and deactivated the Logitech programs in the startup for all users. Installed SP1. Rebooted. Came back after several hours. Re-Attached the USB devices. Everything works. For the moment, I have the Logitech entries still DISABLED in the startup.

Disabled Pop-ups Keep Appearing

May 26, 2010

The wife has her Vista 64bit box which uses dial up set NOT to check for and automatically DL updates because it is not online always plus user account controls are turned off. Updates are installed every couple days when available while she is at work by me. Because these are disabled pop-ups keep appearing about checking setting and such when I know what the setting are!! Is there a way to keep these notification pop-ups from coming up?

Evertime these things come up the wife gets all paranoid and is calling me to come check because the thing crashed once and now the warning pop-ups or whatever are getting her all bent out of shape even though I tell her to ignore them and they will go away. We know what the settings are and do not need the stupid pop-ups telling us that something is not set the way the damn system thinks it should be!

Alt-F4 & Shut Down Disabled?

Jul 19, 2008

i recently bought a laptop which was on display in Comet in the UK. After having the laptop for a short time i noticed that certain items were disabled, such as the function Alt-F4, when you try and use it, it says the admin has disabled the feature which confuses me as i'm the Admin... and also when you go to the start menu and click the arrow next to the lock key, restart and shut down are not there as was expected. The only way to shut down is by logging out and doing it from there, i thought this was possible from the normal screen?

Many Devices Disabled?

Apr 3, 2010

A friend of mine gave me a his HP notebook which recently developed a serious problem. It's an HP Pavilion DV6305 that uses an Nvida chipset and AMD cpu and runs Vista Home Basic. When he first bought it, I set it up for him with Eset's Nod32 anti-virus. The problem appears to be that at least 10 devices appear to be unable to load the associated device driver and in each case (looking in device manager) the error message appears to be: Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (code 39)Googling on this error only turned up dozens of references to people having this problem with their CD / DVD drive but nothing like what is going on here.

Of course my first suspicion was a virus, since this seems to be the case with so many people having problems these days. I scanned with the installed Nod32 V4.0.x and it didn't find anything. Of course not that that completely rules out a virus. Next I tried running a disk test on the boot drive with both "Automatically fix file system errors" and "Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors" and the system log seems to indicate that the hard drive is clean with no problems.

The devices that are disabled include both the Ethernet and wireless controllers, the USB controllers, the HP quick Launch Buttons, the audio controller, etc. The only way to get files onto the machine is by burning them onto CD, since the CD / DVD drive is one of the few devices that appears to be working. I've tried downloading drivers for the Nvidia chipset and networking controllers, putting them on a cd and trying to reinstall them but while the installation appears to complete without errors on reboot the device still doesn't work properly. Does anyone have any ideas what I could do to fix this problem? If this is a virus, any ideas on how to remove it since the installed scanner can't detect it?

Upgrading Is Disabled

Feb 7, 2009

I have just bought a HP notebook which has Vista Home premium 32bit O/S with Service pack 1. I tried upgrading this to Vista Ultimate with the Upgrade DVD. After entering the product key, I opted for the upgrade, after a while a message came up saying that the upgrading is disabled. I read somewhere that this trouble might have been caused by SP 1. So, one has to delete the SP1 and then upgrade. I looked into the add/remove programmes in the control panel, but there is no SP1 in the list.

UAC Control Disabled

I can activate it - so it says it is on, but then once my computer is restarted it turns off.

Bitlocker Now Disabled

Jun 13, 2008

I have been using bitlocker on a Sony Vaio - with TPM. Yesterday someone used my PC to check an XP installation CD. They booted from the CD and when they reached the setup screen, they exited. After that I had to enter my key as I booted the PC - indicating that bitlocker had detected a change. The way to stop having to do that is to turn bitlocker off and then on again.I turned bitlocker off, but when I went to turn it one again, it tells me that my system is not configured to use Bitlocker. It tells me to remove any bootable CD or DVD and reboot and if that doesn't help to upgrade my BIOS. There are no CDs or DVDs and my BIOS is the latest version - and was working yesterday with Bitlocker. I am assuming that the XP instalation CD has in some way altered my disk drive so that it no longer appears to be configured to use Bitlocker. I have run the Drive Preparation Tool,

How To Initialize New HDD? Not Found Anywhere (as Admin).

May 15, 2008

Vista 64 Home Premium.

Where is the tab/command to initialize (fdisk?) a new HDD?

I am logged in as Administrator (system says so) with full control/permission.

I can see the hard drives in the Device Manager/Disk Drives. All drives are "good" per the controller and I can see them as physical devices on the computer.

They all show as "Not Initialized" when I ask each to opopulate the Volumes info, and there is no obvious/apparent way to do it. Nothing on the controller shows it either.

Tried "Simple New Volume" under Disk Management--

doesn't/won't work because drive is not initialized.

One drive = one big partition = one drive letter.

Determine If A User Is An Admin

Feb 6, 2009

I am using the techinque to get the TokenElevationType using the API GetTokenInformation on Vista to determine if a user is an admin. It seems to work fine on Vista Business/Ultimate etc. However, it fails on Vista Home. Does anyone have any clues? The code is along the following lines:

TOKEN_ELEVATION_TYPE elevationType;
DWORD dwSize;

GetTokenInformation(hUserToken, TokenElevationType, &elevationType,
sizeof(elevationType), &dwSize);

switch (elevationType)
{
case TokenElevationTypeDefault:
TRACE(_T("TokenElevationTypeDefault - User is not using a split token"));
m_bAdmin = FALSE;
break;

case TokenElevationTypeFull:
TRACE(_T("TokenElevationTypeFull - User has a split token, and the
process is running elevated"));
m_bAdmin = TRUE;
break;

case TokenElevationTypeLimited:
TRACE(_T("TokenElevationTypeLimited - User has a split token, but the
process is not running elevated"));
m_bAdmin = TRUE;
break;

Admin Account Missing

Mar 14, 2009

i was messing around with the user accounts. For some reason when i go to switch user or log of I only have the option to log on as a regular user without admin rights. its says AMD below the picture... Now if i go into the user account settings i see my created admin account but i can not make any changes since I have no admin rights on the account i am logged in with. When I try to switch users I cant because only the account with no rights appears.

I tried to boot in save mode to see if the admin account is hidden...it is not but it says ASP.NET with the name of the admin account ( no idea if that means any thing) When I try to unhide a account if gives me error messages. So I have an admin account but it is not visible when trying to log in..in order for me to install programs or allow downloads in need to be the admin.

Secure Superowner Above Admin

Feb 5, 2009

I need to get something straight with the underlying security layers or ermisisions of vista (ultimate). I have created a group SUPERUSER in which I have added my admin user account (NOTE, not administrator but another account with Administrative privileges, i.e. is part of group Administrators).

I have only added this one account to the superuser, and NOT the administrator. Now... This is because I wish that the superuser has a folder lets say where not even the other administrators can access! Question is this: Should I add SYSTEM as well as SuperUser (both with full rights) and remove ALL OTHER GROUPS to this folder.........

Admin User Password

Feb 13, 2009

A friend of my sisters has asked me to look at her PC, as it keeps "just crashing". A thorugh technical description to help I know!.However, I have found that the PC, which is running Vista Home Premium, has 3 user accounts.

1) Admin account with password
2) Standard User
3) Guest

I can not log into the admin account as I do not have the password, and my sisters friend is unreachable.The standard user account, wont letme do anything remotely techy, or use any system tools, or install my own PC diagnostic tools. The user account doesn't have the correct permission. It wont even update any of the virus definitions with out asking for the password.I have a copy of Active Password changer, that I have used in the past in these circumstances, but the PC was bought from a big retail chain, and has been set up with the usual hidden partion with important files on it. So Active Password Changer can not see the partion with the SAM database on it to change the admin password.

Needless to say - I *am* logged on as member of Administrators group and I am running Data Sources (ODBC) from elevated command window and/or "Run As Administrator". I even logged on as "Administrator" - with the same result. Seems to me that something is wrong with my registry somewhere (most precise diagnosis I can come up with ...).Is there anything I can do short of reinstalling Vista?
