What Is COM Surrogate?

I have been trying to find a video converter program that i am happy with and have downloaded several trials. Everytime i hit browse to find the video in the programs when it opens my movie folder i get the message "COM Surrogate has stopped working windows is checking for a solution." Then it says after a few seconds of searching "a problem has caused the program to stop working correctly. windows will close the program and notify you if a solution is available." I hit close program and nothing happens. No program closes that i have active. And it will do this over and over. Im a little afraid that when i do find a program i like that this may cause problems with converting my movies fully. What is COM Surrogate?

The problem is caused by URGE which is no longer being distributed by MTV Networks. URGE has joined with Rapsody, a subscription service from RealNetworks Inc. As a result there is no update available for URGE. The solution that microsoft suggest to me is: Uninstall the software that caused the problem. I purchased and installed the latest version of Limewire Pro today. I then proceeded to download a video file and stored it in the same shared folder I have used with every version of Limewire. As per usual, I ran a virus scan on the file prior to attempting to open it with Windows Media Player. I then get a message telling me that Windows COM surrogate has shut down the player to protect my computer. To ensure that my AV program was not missing something, I downloaded the same file from two other listed sources. After getting the same result with three different versions of the same file, I have to assume that all three are nor corrupt. The problem is either with Limewire or Vista.

I'm getting a com surrogate has stopped working message constantly, suddenly out of the blue today.
I do not have Nero
I uninstalled VLC
I upgraded (today) latest Vista Codec package + 64 bit components which I installed 3 days ago and never had an issue. I just started getting the error message today an hour ago out of the blue and I didn't even modify anything on the system nor install any software for a few days. I have Vista Ultimate 64bit with SP1 Refresh 2 (as of 3-4 days ago). I rebooted after uninstalling Divx, VLC and then installed the latest Vista codec pack. Still getting the same error message.
