Virtual Memory - Changing The Paging File Size

Aug 12, 2009

I currently have 4GB of RAM installed, of which in real terms, only 3.07GB is actually being used by my system.

I am wondering, given that my RAM is sitting at max. levels, if there are any reasons, advantages or benefits to be had in changing the Virtual Memory - Paging File Size for all Drives, from the current size of 3369MB to the recommended size of 4603MB, or more....say 4950MB??

Optimal Size The Virtual Memory System

Jan 23, 2008

I am running Vista Business x64 on my notebook. It is a C2D 2.00GHz with 4GB RAM and a Geforce Go 7700. My question is, what would be the optimal size of the virtual memory (page file) that my system should use? I currently have min=max=4092MB. Should I lower it or raise it to be 1.5x or 2.0x my RAM? Or should I leave it as 1.0x my RAM like it is now?

Paging File - Why Do I Need It?

Apr 23, 2008

I recently bought an expensive new 1tb hdd & bought another 4gb of ram. I decided to turn of the paging file so that it saves wear & tear on my hdd & have had no problems whatsoever. Is there any disadvantage to having the paging file turned off? I heard that it mirrors the amount of ram you have, so mine was 8gb is this true? Also, i know vista only allows 32 bit apps to access 2gb of ram, but if i have a paging file, would windows allow 32 bit apps to use 2gb of ram as well as extra space in the paging file? Or does it only allow 2gb of memory ram or otherwise

Paging File Size: Settings

Jan 26, 2009

My computer has three (3) physical hard drives. Two (2) of them with one or two logical partitions and the smallest drive without any partition. ALL partitions are listed in the "Virtual Memory Paging File" window.

The question is this; should I set just one (1) partition as my page file, or should I set ALL listed partitions (Main and Logicals) to be "Managed By System"? or; set all but one to "No paging file" and set the smallest drive for the "Virtual Memory Paging File"?

Drive 1 is 750 Gb partitioned in 200Gb (Main)/200Gb (Logical)/350Gb (Logical).

Drive 2 is 500 Gb partitioned in 250 (Main)/250Gb (Logical).

Drive 3 is 160 Gb not partinioned (no Logical).

Have found lots of information and suggestions on setting "Paging File Size" but none mentions anything about the logical partitions. I currently have them ALL set to "System Managed Size" and it reports a file size of 141000Mb allocated. I guess this is about 10% of the total disk capacities?

FSX And Low Virtual Memory

Feb 6, 2009

I am running Vista 32bit with 4gigs of ram, AMD Phenom 9950, just put in an ATI 4870X2 with 8.11 drivers. I have two hard drives, one 250gb with the OS and FS9 and FSX on it and another 500gb with really nothing on it. I have my virtual memory set up as follows:

C: and D: drive set to system managed. Should I set the custom size and to what intial and max size?

Im leaning towards the 4870x2 card the cause of the memory leak not sure if it is a driver issue, might install the 5.8 version and see what happens. Also, plan on moving FS9 and FSX to the bigger drive.

Virtual Memory And 12gb Of RAM

Dec 20, 2008

This is my first post in this forum, but I was just wondering if any of you had experience with virtual memory in Vista x64 and the page file when you have a large amount of RAM. I recently just build a machine which has 12gb of RAM. I am begginning to think that this was a waste of money, because no matter what I do, I cannot seem to get the ram useage to exceed 30 percent, or roughly 4gb of ram. I am a computer science major and completely understand how virtual memory works and what paging is; however, I was always taught that if the OS (Vista in this case) will only swap memory when the memory is full, but this has not been the case as I know that Vista is paging some of the memory onto the disk even though it has another 8gb of free memory to use.

I was just wondering what your thoughts were on disabling paging in Vista and if any of you have experience with doing so when you have a system with a large amount of memory. Also, I would love to hear anybody's explaination as to why Vista is paging the memory onto the HDD when in fact it's not neccessary in my case. Perhaps I do not understand it correctly? I am currently on a different computer, but tommorow I will disable the paging in Vista to see what kind of performance difference I experience, if any and post what I find.

Changing Virtual Memory Size

Jun 29, 2008

I am trying to change the size of Virtual memory on my sisters laptop. It is running vista home and has only 1 gb of RAM. I click on where you change the virtual memory and click CUSTOM (on the C drive, which is only hard drive she has). And i set it to 2048 min and 2048 max. I Click set then ok. then ok again, and once again ok. Then it prompts me to Restart the computer, so I do. But after I restart and check to see if it worked, it still shows that the custom size wasn't added.

Fast Machine Is Slowed Down By Virtual Memory.

Jun 22, 2009

Running Vista Ultimate 64-bit on M6400 notebook with 16GB RAM.

With 16GB RAM does Vista really need any virtual memory?

My quad core, 16GB RAM notebook would be faster without hard drive access due to virtual memory.

Can I turm off virtual memory or set it to some very low value (possibly 0)?

My preference is to use the 16GB RAM and should that be insufficient then I decide which programs to close. I don't want Vista using 4GB, or 6GB RAM, etc., and continually writing/reading to HD which slows things down and does not make full use of the physical RAM present.

Virtual Memory Control And Settings In Windows

Mar 23, 2008

I need to know if there is anyway to specifically set Vista to allow a program to see a certain Size for Virtual memory. oracle Products require Virtual Memory to be verified before they go through installation. The problem here is that Windows Vista Paging files are not seen as Virtual memory for some reason. The system I have is set with 4000 plus mb of Paging file but when the oracle check completes it shows 0 mb available. Going to a newer version of Oracle is not an option as this is a required product for a College Course. Going back to XP is not an option since no one ever wrote XP Drivers for this hardware. I've hausted all the resources from HP and Oracle and need to try this end of the problem now.

ReadyBoost: "Automatically Manage Paging File Size For All Drives"

May 2, 2008

I inserted a new, blank 1GB USB drive into laptop. Vista Home Basic promptly asked if I wanted it to be used for ReadyBoost. I responded "Yes". Subsequently when booted-up, Right-Click Computer Advanced System Settings - Advanced tab - Performance (.... virtual memory) - Settings button - Advanced tab - Virtual Memory Change ... button.

It shows "Automatically manage paging file size for all drives" is ticked: "Paging file for each drive:" C: System managed F: (the USB stick drive): None

If I untick the "Automatically manage .." and select the USB stick drive, it shows only 103MB available; this figures, because the USB stick drive "F:", shows a "ReadyBoost.sfcache" file of 870,401kB, created at the time of the latest boot-up; thus it seems to be creating or refreshing the paging file on boot-up.........

Virtual PC 2007 Windows ME - Place Virtual Disk

Jul 29, 2009

Am I correct in assuming that, for Windows ME to run in a Virtual PC 2007 window, the Windows ME virtual disk must be located inside a disk partition that is FAT32? On a test run, I tried to install WinME on a virtual disk in a folder that was in my normal Vista partition (NTFS), and it didn't get far. I tried placing the WinME virtual disk inside an FAT32 partition, and although I didn't finish the installation process, I got that far, with the WinME instalation screen having popped up and ready for installation. One other thing: Is it possible to place the WinME virtual disk inside a logical FAT32 partition? Or must it be a primary partition?

HDD Like A USB Memory Stick For File Transferes

Jun 12, 2008

I picked up a shiny new PC yesterday much to the annoyance of the wife (oops) and verything seemed to be running nicley untill I wanted to use an old HDD like a USB memory stick for file transferes. I plugged it in and a little message popped up saying device installed (i think), but I could not find it anywhere. No folder or options as to which way I'd want to view the files and nothing on the "Computer" tab. It was like there was nothing plugged in. I know it should work as it shows on the wifes laptop with 32bit Vista on it.

A friend with a bit more Vista experience tried to install WMD from a menu which came up as failed and now tries to install on every time I switch the machine on. But also, now when I click the "Computer" tab, explorer crashes and hangs. Task manager tries to close it but nothing happens, so I have to reset the PC. It seems like the HDD is searching for something while it tries to close. Could my HDD be at fault or should I just reinstall Vista and cross my fingers? Games and the internet work fine, but I can't access the computer tab.

Access More Memory, Even On A 32-bit System

Dec 18, 2008

No matter how much memory you have in your PC, you may not be getting the most out of your installed RAM. A few little-known system tweaks can improve the way Windows manages memory, freeing up more RAM for your applications. As described in an entry on the Microsoft Developer Network, all non-server 32-bit versions of Windows XP and Vista impose a memory limit of 4GB. Your system may allow you to install more than this amount of RAM, but with few exceptions, the extra memory won't do Windows or your applications any good.

Moreover, even if you have 4GB of memory installed in your PC, you may not be able to use it all. For example, if your video card comes with 1MB of memory and you have 4GB of RAM, your system actually has 5GB of memory physically installed. But Windows will use only 4GB of that total, regardless. It gets worse: according to a comment posted to the MSDN article, Windows itself is getting only 3GB because the video card gets 1GB. This happens because the memory aperture — a portion of system memory — is used to work with the video system. Ways to break through Windows' RAM ceiling

Fortunately, there are techniques you can use to get around Windows' system-memory limitations. One method is to use Physical Address Extension (PAE), a feature of x86 processors that lets 32-bit operating systems overcome the 4GB memory limit. Another MSDN article explains that 32-bit Windows operating systems support PAE. Even though XP and Vista still cling to the 4GB limit with PAE enabled.....

System Locks - Aka Another Memory Issue.

Apr 12, 2009

System is 1 month old.

Gateway FX6800 6Gb Ram, i7 CPU.

System locks up every 3 days +/- or so.

System is now approx. 2 hours since reboot. TM reports.

Physical: 6134
Cached: 4299
Free: 34

Physical Memory Usage show 2.1Gb/35%

Over the course of the 3 days the amount of Physical Memory Used will grow to 5.5Gb+ at which time the system slows down to a crawl and the system needs to be rebooted.

There are 3 users with accounts on the system and all stay logged in 100% of the time. Switching between users as necessary. Early warning of the system needing to be rebooted is the system taking 10+ minutes to switch between users.

If I add up the reported (in TM) Working Set of RAM for all of the running applications it adds up to only a fraction of the amount of physical memory reported as being used.

I at first thought the problem was related to Norton 360. But after uninstalling/reinstalling it several times and eventually leaving it uninstalled the problem is still there.

Shared System Video Memory

May 18, 2008

so i wanted to know what is "shared system video memory" and how to remove it? I learned it was RAM that was used to help the graphic card that is new with windows vista, but am I loosing this ram in the games or is it not important? i have an asus F3JM AK022H with geforcego7600 (512mo dedicated memory) and 2go RAM.

In my graphic card properties it's noticed that i have 512mo dedicated video memory, 0mo system memory, 767mo shared system video memory and 1279mo total graphic memory (the 512 of my GC and the 767 "shared system video memory")

So my question is : do I loose those 767mo of RAM during my games? (i don't think my CG needs more memory since it already has 512mo dedicated), and I have only 2go RAM so if I loose 767mo i don't have much RAM left. And can I change this setting or disable it?
