After the rolling green bars of starting up vista, the hard drive makes alot of noise (lots of disk activity?), vista takes 5-10 seconds longer. The noise is very annoying! And I'm concerned that it will ruin the hard drive. Plus my 20 second bootup is also longer. This started happening after two months living with vista - didnt happened at day one.
I noticed the problem after installing new drivers for my VGA and manually installing some vista/office 2007 security updates. Coincidence? I've tried uninstalling the drivers and installing new ones - but no luck. I've also tried chkdsk /r in an elevated privledge command prompt and a defrag, anti-virus scan and spyware scan. Furthermore, the only thing I have changed in the boot up sequence is: adding 4 core cpu support when booting up, and stopping a few startup items. I have also disabled the readyboost service.
Whenever i try to download anything it just make a little beeping noise when the downloading is done and then when i go to check where my program is it's gone,
Sorry if this is the wrong section but, sometimes when im just on the computer my computer will make a noise. I really dont know how to describe the noise but its like when the fan in your room is turned to like extra fast. Whenever the noise comes my computer just starts to lag.
i've just taken a headfirst dive into vista and as far as i can tell, besides the UAC, im becoming quite fond of it. heres the backstory for my issue. Purchased a HP tx2510us tablet, it came with vista home premium, I had a copy of Vista ultimate off of the computer my parents bought(they "down"graded to xp pro). downloaded all the drivers off the HP website, wiped the HD and installed vista Ultimate x64. Then i reinstalled all the drivers(the x64versions, i made sure of that. Now the issue. Whenever I turn on or off my computer. the speakers pop. This also happens if the speakers are muted. I'm not sure if this is a driver issue, or somthing else. EDIT* The popping noise also happens when the windows bootup sound plays.
One of my HP laptops, HP Pavilion dv9650us, went off warranty about two months ago. I was using the machine to help fix another computer's problem when I noticed that its dvd-drive is making loud grinding noises and is slowing down the computer whenever I would access the drive. I suspect that the drive is about to die.
I am not sure how long the drive has been doing this since the laptop is being used primarily by another family member. I purchased an extended warranty through Office Depot, but that family member cannot afford for that computer to be sent off for an unknown amount of time so I am actively considering replacing the drive myself.
I am looking at drives on amazon.com and unsure if a 'universal laptop slimline drive' will fit. Are the drives fairly universal between manufactorers? The current drive is an HD-DVD drive so I was hoping to upgrade to a blu-ray drive. Is it possible? FYI: These kind of internal laptop dvd drives are not available from newegg or even frys. I'd rather not buy directly through hp.
I just finished setting up my Media Center on Vista Home Premium, got all the latest drivers and SP1 and updates. DVD playback is giving me some trouble though, and I've resorted to playing them on my 4-5 year old DVD player instead, which is just plain stupid when I have this whole machine set up with Vista Media Center. I've experienced several problems:
1) No sound.
I have the sound card stereo cable going into the back of the TV, it's possible that VMC isn't downsampling the 5.1 audio to stereo and that it's outputting it over a different port.
2) Drive noise
VMC spins up the drive, as if it's buffering up, then slows it down, then spins it up again, then slows down. It's really annoying as you can imagine. Is there a way to make it read the DVD video disc at a constant, lower speed? Say 2x or 4x ?
3) Jittery image
When played on a standalone player the DVD is fine. However on Vista Media Center it's a bit "jumpy". You can see this quite clearly for example on the credits, text appears (for example film title) and it's jittery, moving up and down a tiny bit. On the standalone player its perfectly stable.
4) Image colors
There's a warning text at the start of the DVD, the general copyright thing. The background is blue on a standalone player, but when played through VMC it's pink?! Definitely too much red on the output.
The Hard Drive LED light on my Sony Vaio keeps blinking EVERY SECOND. When it's really quiet I can hear it too, it's constantly writing. Constantly. I did my research - read all the threads on the net and so far I have disabled:
Windows index Windows defender Windows search Superfetch System Restore Readyboost Defragmenter I have uninstalled google desktop.
The system is totally virus and spyware free, and the anti-virus is not scanning (schedule scan disabled). All Vista updates are installed. Nothing has helped. I've run out of things to disable. I'm running Vista Business SP1, Dual Core 2.2 Ghz, 3 Gb RAM.
I have a ASUS laptop running Vista Home Premium, 64 bit OS. I have several programs that I use but no loner have the insall disks for. Should I have to reformat in the future I would hate to lose them. Here's what I'm thinking: Buy a extrenal hard drive. Seagate, 1Tbit, usb, cost $90.00. Copy my hard drive to it. If I need to reformat. Reinstall Vista from my recover disk that came with the computer. Then copy files from external drive. Bingo. All my old programs would be there and working. Question is: Can this be done? What file/folders do I need to copy to the external drive?
Its been about 3 months now since i've been using vista and unlike my previous experience with other OS vista 64 is the worst of all........It crashes alot comparing to other OS and also it has a lot of incompatibly issues by that i mean here is a problem i am having nowdays with this Vista thingy OS. I already have .netframe 3.5 installed and still this application as well as some other works smoothly on other OS crashes on Vista. And due to these regurlar basis problem i think i might wanna give up and install either Linux or Ubuntu.
my computer has become laggy unlike before and also i am having alot of issues opening IE 8/Firefox with alot of crashes. So i just ran hijackthis and made a log. So any expert out there plzz take a look at the log and tell me if there is any harmful things that i might wanna check.
Is it possible to copy my entire hard drive onto an external hard drive. Vista Premium, all the data, etc. and what would be a good software to accomplish this?
I have an external hard drive, I reformated it so I could use Vista's backup. Now it seems that when my brother inlaw tries to put some music files(Itunes) that the hard disc is unavailable to his computer. At this stage it seems that Vista has conned me into destroying a perfectly good WD harddrive!I have created a second partion on the hard drive and I am reformatting that, as I write this, but the only formatting option seems to be this NTFS, and that is what I had already formatted the ExtHD to so I think this formatting will be to no avail! From what I can figure I need to format into FAT but I tried a quick format an ex-fat option was there, but the problem was the same. I am becoming more frustrated with Vista, seems I just keep running into things that should be simple and aren't!
when booting up from a vista cd I accidentally had my usb external hard drive plugged in and the drive has been emptied and replaced by windows there are sintimental photos etc on the drive can anyone help me to restore them
I was wonder if anyone know a solution for the following problem. I have a ethernet hard drive and I've never had a problem until using vista and windows server 2008. both operating systems are unable to browse the drive, instead it completely crashes explorer.exe. Windows server 2003 & XP have never had trouble.
i bought a kit for an old hard drive. i got it to work once ealier today, and now it doesn't work. when i plug it into the usb, it will not successfully install. the kit is a rocketfish hd 35, the hard drive is seagate u8 model st313021a. the "remove hardware" icon appears in the tray, but no designated lettered drive appears on the computer.
the hard drive was part of an older tower that i couldn't get to boot. it's strange because just today i accessed the hard drive and located old pictures, music and other files that i hadn't seen in a few years. had i known this would have happened i would have started saving right away. i thought i had it working.
I've upgraded my machine at some point in the last year, where I added a new 500GB drive and moved my C: partition across to it. The previous 250GB drive was left in for additional storage. Just recently (while upgrading my BIOS) I realised that my system was still booting from the 250GB drive even though Windows was on the other disk. There is a fair possibility in the not too distant future that I'll replace the 250GB disk with a larger disk, in which case I won't be able to boot. Is there a safe and reliable way to change it so that the system boots from the 500GB disk?
I was starting my computer today (that has Vista), and during the start up process, a black screen came up stating that there was an error opening up my external hard drive and it was checking for errors. After it finally booted up, I went to open the hard drive files, and it was totally BLANK! I then restarted the computer, and still the hard drive is EMPTY! I had ALL my important files in there!
The ONLY thing that looks promising is that when I go to Start then to Computer, it shows the hard drive there, and it still shows that 43GB are free of 111GB of storage (same info shows by right clicking on it and going to Properties). Why would it show this if nothing is on the hard drive anymore? Is there ANYWAY to recover these files again you think???? I NEED those files!!!! Remember that the hard drive STILL PHYSICALLY WORKS. It's just that I cannot access the files on my pc at the time for some reason.......
I just bought and installed a external hard drive. I am fairly knowlegable about computers but this is my first Ex. Hard drive and know very little about there use. So what I want to know is how to save my Family Tree Makers files to it. And once I do that how do I know for sure it is opening from my new drive and not my computer C: drive? I saved it to a DVD one time but when the time came when I needed it all that was there was a short cut but no files.
I have Windows XP and Vista. I always go through "safely remove hardware" before pulling off USB drive on XP. However, I have been trying to do the same on Vista, it seems that I cannot do the same as XP. For instance, I plug in my USB on Vista and it appears as H drive on Vista, when I am ready to do "safely remove hardware", I don't see the device drive H is on the "Safely remove hardware" window, so I cannot stop the H drive. I am concerned about the Vista hardware.
I am on Windows Vista and office 2003 and 2007 and I cannot stop my computer hard disk from tinkling away, blue light flashing, when I first put it on, its as if it has a mind of its own. I have stopped it installing automatic updates, uninstalled a lot of the start up things in msconfig and it is still active for about 5 or 10 minutes and is nearly driving me mad. It makes booting up so slow and all the programs are bionic to start. I wondered if its to do with Word making its thumnails (file searching) does anyone know how to stop this, or any other suggestions that it may be.
My PC gives of a bleeping noise on occasions this gets quite annoying and I have to shut down to get rid of it, It is a four month old PC Quad core Intel 372 gig HD only 75 gigs used on drive. Vista Premium, Windows One Care. I have heard that a faulty Drive could be responsible. I can take it to be checked as it is on Warranty but can they see if it is the drive when it has only happened on five occasions in four months?
I am not sure if this is the appropriate place to ask this, but here we go I just bought a new Laptop, All is great, It is a HP Pavillion DV9000. I have noticed the CPU Noise is alot louder than those of Toshiba ie. Is there a way to lower this sound?
my issue is while playing ET:QW my sound cuts in and out? only when gaming on a server. i have installed all the latest drivers for everything-- all 64BIT drivers.. so i am at a loss why my sound cuts out.
I had a problem with my old computer in the last days of its life !!!! ... ... before it was gone .... it had become so that everything I wanted to with it, from opening an IE or Firefox window to using a virtual machine using VMWare Workstation, its fan (and I think the CPU fan)'s voice increased. Now I have a laptop and it is ON most of the time. Sometimes when I come and sit by it, its fan is also working in an increased revolution and hence increased voice (of course its voice is much lower than my old desktop but it is still not the normal voice) and when I open the Task Manager to see if any process is using the CPU very much causing this noise, I don't find any process.
Can somebody guide me to know what is the cause of this? Because most of the time when I sit by it and start using it (and of course simple use not something like starting a game or ....) after some time, its fan's revolution decreases and so is its noise. Is it possible that this is because my laptop gets warm? If so, how can I do something to prevent this?
i have an older maxtor 250gb ide hard drive and i am trying to put it in my computer so i can reformat it and install vista ultimate, the thing is when i go to disk manager i can see the drve, feel the drive, but it wont let me initialize it or anything, it comes up as "the request could not be performed because of an I/O devise error, the disk was originally in my modded xbox and i could acces it with xp.
I purchased a new hard drive and named it NEW-BACKUP. I did a exact disk copy from my old BACKUP drive. My wife uses the old drive now. I have renamed my new drive to BACKUP. I am doing complete system backup's pretty frequently. To verify that the backups are happening, I typed in the command "wbadmin get versions" and got a list of the backups. The disk name showed up as "NEW-BACKUP". "NEW-BACKUP" is the destination drive for the backup and renamed as "BACKUP.
I just inserted a SD/MMC Card in my laptop, and it changed my external hard drive letter from F to G?, how can I change it back to F again?, as I had everything setup on the FRIVE, now nothing recognises it?
