I'm logged in as a system administrator and i cannot stop the services trough task manager. I tried to modify the services.msc file to allow permissions for administrator as full control but it cannot be done. Check box Full control is unable to be checked.
View 5 RepliesIs it bad to give yourself full control when you go to Computer(Right click)>Properties>Security tab>Edit> Click the box full control (for Authenticated Users)? Is it a security threat or anything? Right now all that is checked is Special permissions. Can I check more of these, if not check full control? Also, is it okay to check Full control for the other options (SYSTEM, Users, etc.)?

If a manual check for updates is initiated the user gets the error "Windows Is Unable To Check For Updates". One update, Office 2007 SP1, has been downloaded but if the user tries to install it Microsoft Update hangs. This problem appears to have come about because the PC is connected to an ADSL Modem/Router which hasn't been able to connect for three months. The ADSL problem has now been resolved. BITS and the Windows Update service are started and set to Automatic. I don't have easy access to this machine.
View 6 Replies View RelatedError check on my HP Laptop that has vista home edition. for some reason it froze at 4% in the first stage (1 of 5), at this point i was able to exit the error check by pressing Escape, i went on and defragmented my computer next and did various virus and spyware cleanups, then i decided to do the error check again, this time the same thing happened but now i am unable to exit the error check. so my question is: is there anything i can do on my own or should i send it in to a professional?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI'm at my wits' end and don't know what to do next --I have Vista Home Premium on a 36-bit computer. I unstalled a local USB Dell printer and it was working fine. Then it started printing tiny letters, then stopped printing at all and printer icons disappeared from the Control Panel. I used Windows Update and installed Service Pack 1. The printer icons are back, but there are now multiple copies of the printer which I'm unable to delete. At restart, the printer prints the same page each time. I went into Services, stopped and restarted the spooler to no effect.
Would appreciate any thoughts on how to fix this.
I'm running Vista Home Premium x64, 2GB memory, NVidia 8600 GT with ASUS M2N motherboard. My problem is this: About four days ago I started my system and left the room. When I came back the monitor was blank even though the computer was running. I had to do power button shut down. It started back up without a problem. Later on I tried to open the device manager from the control panel and got a half second flash of a screen but it would not open. That started me looking at other shortcuts in the control panel (classic view).
I have since found that I cannot access: Auto Play, Backup and Restore, Default Programs, Ease of Access, Network and Sharing Center, Parental Controls, Performance Information and Tools, Personalization, Power Options, Speech Recognition Options, System, User Accounts, Welcome Center, Windows Anytime Upgrade, Windows Sideshow and WWindows Update. I haven't been able to find any information about this particular problem anywhere I've looked. I had the UAC turned off and always got a warning after startup that it was disabled. I turned it back on and can now access the device manager but everything else is still inaccessable. I'm still able to use my system but it's driving me nuts knowing it's not 100%.
I can't access the NVIDIA Control panel, I get an instant error message, as per attached. I am running 175.16 driver and I can't install newest driver as I need to access the NVIDIA Control panel so I can set up dual monitors. I can't even run Driver Sweeper, it leaves 3 files behind and I don't think it does an uninstall.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have two user accounts on Vista Home Pro. One is a standard, limited user account (password protected) and the other is my admin account (obviously with admin privileges and password protected).
I am not sure when this started happening but I am unable to launch control panel under my admin account. I get a pop-up of "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the item". The title bar of this pop-up has "::{26EE0668-A00A-44D7-9371-BEB064C98683}"
I can only get to CP from my limited account. Then I am prompted to enter the Admin account's password. At times even trying this fails with the same error the first time I try to launch CP. Usually the second or third time I launch CP it will actually launch.
I recently switched Vista's display language to French, and now I can't get it back to English. Control Panel opens, but most of the icons (including regional settings) don't open anything when I double-click them.
I've searched the internet and nothing has helped.

Vista stopped recognizing my installed USB devices yesterday. System restore, Last Known Good Config and reinstalling the device drivers have not corrected the problem. Also did a registry clean and repair. Tried renaming INFCACHE.1 to INFCACHE.1.bak. Tried the hotfix mentioned in a similar post. Ran a registry scan and repair.
Devices include memory stick, webcam, printer, wireless KB and mouse. USB ports have power, and Vista sees new hardware when its is plugged in, but always sees it as unknown device and cannot find or install drivers. All devices worked fine 2 days ago..........
Vista started giving a blue screen a couple of days ago. Mentioned something about a bad device, but no new devices have been added. Went through the typical steps, tried to boot in safe mode and got the following errors:
AtBroker.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Click OK.
Explorer.exe The application failed to initialize properly. Blue Screen
Then booted to my install dvd, tried to fix errors. Came back with a failed check at the file system integrity check. Ran the check a second time and no errors are found. Can't boot in safe mode, and when i try to repair errors I get no errors found.
i noticed a performance drop with vista 64 so i had a snoop around in task manager checked unwanted services etc only 2 notice it see's 1 cpu core for my pentium d 2.80 ? ive tried a re-installing and un-installing the cpu in device manager with only 1 core installed each time even thoe it knows what cpu model it has installed ?
I've checked the bios which has 2 cores counted, ive even updated my bios anyway and tried re-installing in device manager again, ive also updated my chipset drivers no luck there and ive googled away all day 2 find a solution but all i get is amd vista problems ? ive tried scanning for hardware changes the lot and i can not find any updates from micrsoft and asus(mobo) about this
on 5/25/08, suddenly got lots of threat alerts, checked anti virus etc think it may have been disabled, don't know why. But system logs etc, now warnings, e.g. rule "default block Bla Trojan horse" blocked (my address). Before the chkdisk program start you have the option to skip it, if you do so you get a screen saying "Vista is Configuring the update 3/3" and then restart again...

When using the Spell Check, I inadvertantly clicked on the "Add" button, which put a word I misspelled into my Spell Check list. I would like to remove this unwanted word, but I cannot figure out to get rid of it, since there isn't a "Remove" button in the Spell Check window. Does anyone know if this word can be taken out of Spell Check?

I've tried to go to computer,properties,then tools the the check box, then to schedule a check upon restart,but the UAC box for permission never comes up,nor does it start when I restart the computer,what in the world it going on here it driving me nuts!! View 9 Replies View RelatedDue to a very long and unsuccessful attempt to get Office Enterprise to work properly on a new ACER (VISTA Home Premium) computer that came c/w a pre-installed trial version of Office 2007 as per Office technical support I need to do a clean install of VISTA. My problem is that the only option I have is to re-install the ACER factory load c/w the trial version and all of the other useless stuff. I am contemplating buying either a full or oem version of VISTA Home Premium, Format C, get rid of the hidden partition and start from scratch. What is the difference between oem and full other than the price.. Advice will be appreciated, this is my fourth computer but I have never needed to do anything this drastic before.

I search the drive for every file >1kb giving the total of all files hidden and not as 16GB. I try the computer tools/storage to ascertain why it???s full, disk rescan. I try number of things but nothing. The next day I reboot the laptop and as if by magic I have 52GB space capacity. 1 month I am at the time point 1GB spare capacity, I use TreeSize that tells me I have files totally 17GB. Why is Vista telling me I have no space left?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Home Premium Vista, 64bit and 688GB hard drive(size when checking C: drive). I recently checked and it showed less than half full. Then a few days ago I tried saving a file and I got disk full message. I checked the c: drive again and it showed full- no space available, which should not be. I did a defrag, check disk and that did not work. I do remember seeing a warning around that time, but it vanished before I read it all. I think it said a file was not working or was corrupted and may have said something about "Catalyst". I found Catalyst Control Center on my computer, but that seems to be ATI card (graphics card?). I did delete a bunch of junk so it can now function, but latest check still shows only 72 MB available and that can't be.

The second HDD is checked in the backup settings screen, but greyed out, so I cannot uncheck it. It is not checked for file backup.
How do I exclude this disk from the Full PC Backup?
