64 Booting With Only 254mb Memory!

May 11, 2009

I booted Vista yesterday and it was really really slow. To the point that it spent over 5 minutes on the loading 'welcome' screen, before rebooting, and if left would rinse, repeat the process etc...

System essentials; Q6600, 4gb RAM, Abit IP35-Pro, Vista Ultimate 64

After getting on in safe mode, I can see that;the system is only using 254mb of physical memory! That is all it shows as available in task manager I can see from the performance charts that the memory is maxed out at around 98% all the time. Even trying to run AV in safe mode is painfully slow I cannot even get into my event logs to see if there are any errors. Start > right click 'Computer' > Properties shows that my CPU and Memory specs are 'unavailable', which googling suggests WMI errors but I cannot check my logs! I tripple boot between Vista Ultimate x64, my old 32bit standard Vista and also Windows 7. I can boot into both Vista 32bit and Windows 7 without problem I have booted into both of the above in Safe mode to check that neither also restrict the physical memory in safe mode to 254mb which they do not (and had never assumed they would) I have run HJT and can see some odd services I cannot remove. However, full AV scans and Malware scans do not yeild anything of any use (cookies, no critical items).

Exploring, Memory DiagnosticsIf Vista Detects A Memory

Feb 23, 2007

Memory DiagnosticsIf Vista detects a memory problem in your system such as a faulty RAM module, it will display a notification asking if you want Vista to try to diagnose the problem. Then again you may also recieve the sudden BSOD with the error MEMORY MANAGMENT at the top. You can manually run this tool anytime just typememory in the search box inside the start menu. This tool offers you two options: restarting immediately and checking for problems, or running next time you reboot your machine (the memory diagnostic tool must run at boot time).

Network DiagnosticsWindows Vista also allows you to check the connectivity of your network connection using the Network Diagnostics Framework: An infrastructure and a set of built-in and extensible components that attempts to automatically diagnose and correct network connectivity problems. The usual way to run this check is to open Network Center and click the Diagnose Internet Connection link on the left Vista will either identify ............

Total Memory Available 3.3GB With 4GB Physical Memory Under Windows 7 64 Bit

Nov 29, 2009

I had 4GB physical memoryon the PC. With Windows vista 32 bit, available memory is shown as 3.3GB. I asked and was told that only under 64 bit windows, will the available memory be 4GB. When I upgraded to windows 7, I chosed 64 bit, but the available memory shown in the system is still 3.3 GB. Why is this and is there a way to make the full 4GB available? It's possible that my video card is using RAM instead of its own RAM. If I install a video card with its own RAM, will the full 4GB be available?

Memory With Ultimate X64 SP1: 10% Memory But Free RAM Sits At 0

Jul 3, 2008

I have a problem with Vista Ultimate x64 SP1, I always seem to lose all my free RAM within an hour regardless of system activity, even while idling. I have noticed an svchost.eve process runs each time I reboot which seems to bloat constantly although when I close it down it only frees up about 800MB, what's happening to the rest of my 8GB??? When I launch Task Manager it says I'm only using 10% Memory but free RAM sits at 0?!?!

Out Of Memory And Needed To Free Up Memory?

Aug 23, 2008

I am fairly new to the forums, and VERY new to Vista x64. The machine is new, and I was trying out some apps and games, I was in Secondlife when I got an error messege saying I was out of memory and needed to free up memory. I shut down the app and restarted it. Runs but I watched Task manager and saw my free memory down to almost nothing after an hour or so. The cached seems very high.

I did alittle research and decided to set a second page file on my 1TB hard drive, (OS is on the other HHD's )( regulated by system for size ) I'm not really sure whats going on. Example of just task manager and this page openis attached. Again, any help would be great in getting the memory set up on here optimal.

Vista 64 Installed Physical Memory Vs Total Physical Memory

Mar 26, 2009

I'm running Vista 64 Home (SP1) Premium on a homebuilt machine w/8GB (4 X 2GB modules). Windows is reporting 8 GB of Installed Physical Memory but is reporting only 4 GB of Total Physical Memory. I first noticed this when, after installing a game, the game system specs said 3092 MB of RAM.

I have checked the BIOS and it recognizes 8 GB. Memory Remapping is Enabled. Under Memory Remapping is "PCI MMIO Allocation: 4GB to 3328 MB" (?). MSConfig Boot Options shows Max Memory is not checked and no value in the box below. I tried enabling it and using 8192 as the value, but it made no difference. DxDiag shows 8 GB installed RAM. how I can get windows to make available all 8 GB of RAM? (Motherboard is ASUS Maximus II Extreme w/Intel Q9550 processor running at Q9650 clock speed, memory running at 1127 MHz

Not Booting Using Vista

Jun 3, 2008

I've just started having boot problems with Vista. I've had no problems in the past, but earlier this evening it would restart itself while loading Vista (the green bar loading stage). I used the Startup Repair option from the Vista install disc, and the log shows it successfully repaired a corrupted system volume (exact wording may have been different). Now it boots as far as loading a black screen and the mouse cursor, but doesn't get to the Aurora (blue-Vista-Windows-logo-loading thing). I have tried subsequent Startup Repairs, CHKDSKs, Memory Diagnostic checks, all with no errors to report. Unfortunately, I disabled System Restore a while back... Something I now regret doing! At least I know what I'll be doing as soon as I get it running again! My system is an ASUS M2N-E motherboard, AMD Athlon64 X2 6000+, Corsair 2x1GB XMS2 RAM, Sapphire ATi Radeon 3850... And so on and so forth. I'm running Vista Ultimate 32bit as well.

Booting And PC To Freeze?

A friend's Vista computer started booting only as far as the round Vista logo then froze. I took the PC home and using my keyboard, mouse and monitor did some maintenance, upped the memory etc and took it back. It still froze at the logo. I replaced the keyboard and mouse and monitor one by one to no avail. Took everything home and it worked as a system, but at his house - still freezes. Is this an electrical problem - if so how could I find out? Their other computer works fine.

Freezes After Booting Up

Aug 19, 2009

After booting up the computer the desktop freezes immediately. If it doesn't freeze up immediately I'll have some functionality, but minimal. I'll no longer have access to the internet (no network adapter present), can't run programs (they fail to open) or can't install programs/updates. I have even gotten a couple of Blue screen error messages such as: IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL and DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL.

In safe mode with networking I do have access to the internet. When I try to download updates in safe mode I can't because Install shield will not work, or some other excuse. There are no restore points to restore to. There was a Windows Framework update on August 7th. I tried to uninstall it, but apparently it was never installed properly. No blue screens while in Safe Mode. I've been trying to problem solve this on my own, but with my limited computer repair skills I'm scared to try things.

Booting Into Windows

Oct 23, 2008

I have a Gateway laptop that has (or had ) Windows Vista Home Premium x86 installed. It was a dual core Turion with 2GB RAM. Anyway, here is my problem(s):

When the computer first comes on, right after the Gateway screen it tells me:
System Config Data Read Error.
That is right when it turns on. The BIOS detects the hard drive just fine.

The second problem is:

It tells me that

Windows Failed to start. File: BootBCD
Status: 0xc000000f
Info: An error occurred while attempting to read the boot config data.

I tried to do a system repair with the Vista CD. It took about 10 times for it to work. If I turned the computer off, there is a 50/50 chance it would do the same thing and not work. I was chatting with Gateway support yesterday and the tech told me that Windows could be messing with the BIOS. I find that strange because I thought onceWindows took over, the BIOS has nothing to do with how the computer operates.

Well, I tried doing a system repair and it does not detect the Windows install at all. I figured well, I'll do a clean install and get rid of all of the crap that Gateway puts on their computers. I did that. I was able to make a new partition and format the drive. Windows is able to see the drive, but it tells me that it does not meet the criteria for the install. It will not go any further then that.

Gateway is going to replace the hard drive and if that does not work, they are going to service the laptop because I've only had it for a few months now. It worked fine on Tuesday, on Wednesday it did not work at all. Even with the hard drive out, it still tells me System Config Data Read Error on the BIOS screen. Just wanted to see what everyone else thinks.

I'm leaning more towards a drive controller failure or BIOS problem. If that is the case, then the motherboard needs to be replaced,

Computer Not Booting?

Apr 1, 2008

My laptop (Sony vaio w/Home Premium) came with a trial version of Norton 360. I decided that would uninstall it and replace it with Avast! free home. I uninstalled Norton and any other Symantic software found in Add/remove programs. I also ran the Norton removal tool that someone posted a link to. Everything seemed fine. I noticed that Sony said I had a few software updates that needed to be downloaded & installed. I downloaded them and installed them. Still everything seemed fine.

I had downloaded an earlier version of Avast last month to install on another computer. I had also downloaded the lastest version last night. I accidently installed the earlier version. It installed without any problems but soon notified me that an newer version existed. I then installed the lastest version OVER the installed version. I guess this is where I goofed.

After the install completed the computer needed to reboot. Well the computer would not fully shutdown. My screen went black but the mouse was till lit and I could move the curser. I let the computer sit this way for about 20 minutes. I was finally able to get the computer to shut down by hitting the power button a few times.

This morning when I hit the power button the computer immediately went back to this odd state. Curser worked but no windows. I hit the power button a few times and the computer finally acknowledged it had a problem and allowed me to boot in safe mode. From here I did a system restore to yesterday morning. The computer is fine right now but I would still like to replace Norton with Avast. Then I would like to install SP1.

Booting Into X64 FAST

Feb 24, 2009

Someone once told me he could boot into vista x64 from cold in just 6 seconds, just cant believe that, he had a velociraptor in raid. I have a regular raptor and have tried every trick under the book to get a faster boot, normally take around a minute, even with a quadcore pc with 8gb ram... my partners laptop takes around 30 seconds off that and is nowhere near as powerful. Does anyone have any mega tips for fast boots apart from the dreaded hibernation? I even tried a OCZ SSD but thought they were a waste of money for the like 2 second difference.

I tried restarting and repairing but still no go. The letter " l " key just simply doesn't workk; be it on the regular keyboard or on the on-screen keyboard. Setting Up Dual Booting

May 26, 2008

I've just got a new computer with Vista. I want to set up a dual boot system so that I can also access XP.

I have read that this is much easier to do if XP is the first OS, followed by installing Vista, but I can't do that.

I have also read that it can still be done by creating a new partition from within Vista, then installing XP into that. I understand that this process will overwrite the Vista boot loader and the computer will then only boot into XP, but that a programme called VistaBoot PRO can then be used to reset that, and you are then left with dual-booting.

But has anyone had any experience of doing this? Or are there any foreseeable problems.

E.g. - when I start installing XP, will it need access to the motherboard/graphics card drivers?

One thing I'm wondering about is, at the stage where I can only boot into XP, the hard disk is a SATA one (no RAID set up) and I seem to recall XP having issues with these at boot-up?
